So I figured I would post some pics of my project since I have asked numerous questions and had tons of great advice from many people on this forum. I know it's a buick but with the heart of an Olds. Brief history is I aquired the car in trade for an old pickup back in december. Car had a 403 in it that was half put together. I purchased a 71 350 for misc parts the 403 was missing. After getting the car running I had oil pressure issues and developed lower end noise. I then sent the 350 to the machine shop and picked up a 307 for temp use in the meantime. Well the 307 lasted about 2 weeks and threw a wrist pin. So I got the 350 finished and just dropped it in tonight. I still have some fastening, plumbing and wiring to hook up but it's almost there. Here are some misc pics I took while working on it the last 6 months. Well maybe not. LOL Can someone tell me how to post pics?

Thank you for the compliments guys. I hold them in high regard especially because it's a Buick. Cody does love cars and loves to go to the drag races. He likes those damn tuners though. I will have to try to swing him the "olds" way. As far as the air cleaner is concerned, I have to get the hood on and see what will fit now that I have those carb spacers in.

I like this year Regal and ONLY this year. Had I not found one without any rust and 56K miles I would probably have gotten a cutlass. I also installed a flip out radio/cd/dvd player. I will have to take some pics of it. My stock radio is still in. Very clean.

 

Today was a frustrating day. I did get the car together but it fought me all day and I seemed to loose every tool I needed. I did start it though and was happy that it fired. The first time I attempted to break in the cam my heater core started leaking. I bypassed it and fired the car back up brought it up to 2200 rpm and let it run. It started to run hot within 15 minutes so I shut it down. I am now waiting for it to cool off. So now I am unsure about my cam getting broke in? According to all the info I have I needed to let it run 20-25 minutes. Does anyone have any insight on this?

 

I had the same problem. My engine was around 240 after about 10 minutes. I read about people doing it in 2 sessions, so I tried it and no problems so far, but I only driven the car about 50 miles after the break in so I guess time will tell.

 

I always used 20 min above 2000 RPM. The timing could make it overheat. Also you want to get air moving in front of the car during the break in. FANS FNAS FANS!!

 

I will run it again tomorrow. It spat a little bit when I was starting it but it did sound good above 2000 rpm. I will get some fans on it too. Thanks for the input!

 

Did it get hot the second time around?

 

Yeah it did, but my timing was off. I got the timing on a little better so it doesn't heat up as fast, but I need to switch to a 65 waterpump/radiator so I can actually see the timing tab and get it perfect. Also alot of people suggest doing the break in with out a thermostat, then install it later.

 

I got the cam broke in last night. I had a couple buddies help so I could concentrate on keeping it running at a better temp. Ran good and sounded good through the cam break in and idled pretty good (lope sounds good) but I still have some timing & carb tuning to do. It spits out of the carb some when starting and under light throttle but as I said at 2000 rpms it runs well. Also when idling and in gear it seems to load up and if you give it throttle in gear it spits out the carb. It will start up and idle though. I checked base timing and it is 9degrees btdc and that is in sync with my cam card. I did not check total timing yet because the light I have at home is just a cheap thing with no advance adjustment. I am bringing my other one home from work tonight and will update this after I get some headway on tunning the thing.

 

Sorry guys I have been super busy lately. I now have over 300 miles on the new motor and shes running pretty good. I am in the process of doing some tuning still but am pleased with the turn out. Will get some pics and more info up soon.

 

I know this is a late reply, but having to have that kind of thing on an oldsmobile is very interesting. Some good buick repair questions can be a good solution on that one in order to really make things work out for that one. I hope that this vehicle is still up and running.

As for Cody liking the rice burners, I know it's hard, but it might now be the end of the world. If he's into big power, he'll know that stickers and a coffee can for a muffler doesn't make high horsepower. Plus there's also turbo and superchargers

I drove the car for a while then we decided to buy a house so toys went to the wayside. Needless to say, two years later I am starting another project...1980 Cutlass. I will post some finished pictures of the buick and some of the new project shortly.
