How do I put an oil pickup on a new pump?

I got the old oil pickup off of my old oil pump by twisting it out in a vice. I started knocking it into my new oil pump, and some small sand sized rock type stuff started falling out of it (this was after scrubbing the outside of it in the parts washer, and flushing some solvent though it for a minute to wash/flush it out). Anyway, I ordered a new press on oil pickup/screen that should be here tomorrow.

Can I bang it on with a rubber mallet? Should I put it in the freezer first?

Any other hints. Thanks. Tom.

There is a special " driver " tool made for this chore...I have seen them at the Loan-a-tool counter at Advanced and O'Reilly.

Also YES to chilling the new pick-up before the press fit.

I tack-weld the pick-ups in place on my Oil pumps...but first set the height to no more than 3/8 inch above the floor of the oil pan.

hope this helps

Danny

FYI, the oil screen drive tool works great (used the freezer too). Got one from Autozone.
