By the mid 1950's the model numbers were "88" or "98". The first digit indicated the body size, the "80" series were smaller than the "90" series. The second digit indicated a V8 engine which was the standard engine in use by the 1950's. So the 88 car was samller than the 98 car, there were no 94 cars as Oldsmobile never used a four cylinder engine in the 1950's to my knowledge and surely even if they did have one it would not be put in the largest body style built at the time.
