Olds 350 Refresh

I have a Olds 350 that I will be using as a temporary motor while I build my 403. It has approx 80,000 miles and is '68-'72 block. I tore it down to the short block last night so I can replace rod bearings, main bearings, rings, oil pump, lifters & timing chain. When I tried to lign up my timing marks they would not line up straight like they are supposed to. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to get the cam & crank lined up correctly? Also my cam slides in & out about 1/4". Is this normal? Any help would be appreciated.

Can you explain the procedure you are doing?

I am turning the crankshaft to line up the timing marks but the line on the cam sprocket and dot on the crank sprocket are not matching up in the centered straight line like they should.
