68 442 questions
I have jumped into the muscle car community with a 68 442. In the research I have done with the 442, I was under the impression that all of the 68's had the 400 with the possible exception of the W30. I do think the engine has been replaced in my car. It appears to be a 425. The number on the top of the engine next to the oil fill is 389244D which I see from links on this site indicate it should be a 425. Does anyone know if there were any 68's that had a 425. Further, does anyone know where to find out what the "original" numbers would have been for any specific car/VIN#?
If the 425 wasnt' used in those cars, does anyone know what they did use it in and when? Thanks |

Congrat's on the new toy! One of the other guys, I think it was C.J. who posted a link to a FAQ site that has lots of information about your car. I use 442.com and go to their FAQ's page. Some of the guys have found errors there, but most of it's good data. Your car should have come with a 400 as you said. The 425 was used from 1965 through 1967. The 1968 W30 used a 400 and the Hurst Olds used a 455. The 425 is a potent engine so someone probably changed it in the past. Past my bedtime so I'll end with that. Some of the other guys will be able to add to it. John
