67 Toro CV Joints
67 Toro CV Joints
OK Peeps lets see ...
I took my 67 Toro out on a day cruise on sunday with my local American Car Club. It's running pretty reasonable now. A Few carburation problems, but that's another thread.
Anyhow..
We did about 3 hours driving in convoy , only doing 30 to 40 MPH. Nothing too exessive.
On returning home I put a full RH lock to park and there was the sound you never want to here in a toro ! Only a gentle tap tap tap and I could feel it in the steering wheel and through the pedals.
My 1st thought was - I hope it's not the CV Joint - can you even get them any more (in the UK).
So my question is ..
Is there anything else I should be checking before I suspect the CV joints ? Anythin that could be loose etc.
As a point of relevence - or not, as I mentioned, I have carb/fuel problems. Nearly sorted now and it runs quite well. If I floor it, the tires screech and off you go, but it idles rough.
On the cruise I noticed it would drive rough - hunting and surging - but if I made a right turn, the revs picked up and I drove as smooth as you could want, until you straiten up and it was rough again ! ? * ?>?? Weired, but at the time I though it would give me something positive to look for when diagnosing the idling problem !
May or may not be related, but as the two events happen on a right turn there is a small posibilty they are related.
Any thoughts ??

I don't know about the cv joint problem for sure but it sure does appear to be from your description. About the carb and accelleration problems, I would vote on the carb causing the trouble/smooth performance on RH turns because the carb is not center hung, so a turn in one direction would cause a different behavior than a turn in the other or straightline run. Let's say you are running a little low on your float level so the car can act spurty in full throttle performance because you are sucking the bowl dry too fast, but when you make a right hand turn the float drops earlier than it normally would on a straight line accelleration so you begin to overfill the bowl but since you are full acceleration then the car uses that extra fuel and it seems like a normal/smooth full throttle acceleration that is good. Does that make sense? I am just guessing on this, don't paint my wagon red and run me outta town
Yeah .. I had suspected the float before now. I have a carb rebuid kit, and when I get time I will strip it apart and see if I can get it back together !!
I have a new fuel pump to install too.
As for the CV's are they still available on your side of the pond ?
My supplier is closed Monday's so I cant get an answer from them till tomorrow.
A few pics from our club day out. We went to a quiet country pub for lunch, then onto the city motor museum.

Rich, I did a search under NAPA, they are expensive but have a good listing of parts for older cars, this is what I got.

Hope it helps some. By the way, it looks like your club had a wonderful day out, there are some very nice vehicles there. I spy an old pick-up truck in a beige color, can you tell me about it?
Drat! I see the link didn't get you all the way to the cv joints, just plug in the appropriate data and they have them listed for about $68.00 U.S. isn't that about 32 pounds? Good luck

Hi Dan
Thanks for that. At least I know I can still get them :-)
I think I would have to loose the core charge too - probably cheaper than shipping mine to them !
I dont know much about the pickup. Ive only seen it a couple of times.
Here's a closer pic http://www.handmade-uk.co.uk/25.html...ta1_type=large
Its painted in ivory pearlescent paint. Looks nice ! I think it might be a 58, but not sure.
Next time I see him I'll get some more info.
