Paintable SS-1's with chrome spokes

Fellas, Would anyone know what the original
application would be for these wheels?
The codes are M1* 12 L 14X7 JJ
9 878
Made in the USA
The astrik denotes a small symbol I have never seen before.
Thanks for any help, Adam.

My post won't let me put the 9 under the M1.

By paintable, do you mean body color paint? I thought all the SSI's where painted Argent Gray. Can you post a picture? If not, which one of these is it? http://www.texas442.com/wheels/

If the spokes are chrome, then they are Olds wheels.

If the spokes are painted, they are Chevy wheels.

Both have painted rims.

71 Olds have chrome spokes and chrome rims.

All are 14x7

Here's some pics.
I have more than 8 of these.
Seems this one has an even different code.

The code for 70-72 SSI's is LZ and it will be next to the valve. If it has another code then it is not an Olds wheel. The stampings within the bead area are of no importance. There are some either Mopar or Ford that had a wheel that looks like an SSI but of course has the smaller bolt pattern and different codes.

As mentioned above there are other codes stamped near the valve stem, usually including month/day & application codes.

M1/9 would be Motor Wheel Corp. plant #1 1969 build

in your picture:
M4/2 would be Motor Wheel Corp. plant #4 1972 build

Unless, of course, you wish to identify the wheels.

Thanks guys.
It is always nice to learn new things
about our old Oldsmobiles.
I did find the LZ code by the valve stem.
Here is a pic.

Well, that pic turned out like crap...
It reads, M42 3 29 LZ
But for those wondering, it at least shows
where on the wheel to find the code.

Once you find the LZ code next to the valve stem then any and all other stampings are moot because all LZ wheels are all 14x7JJ etc. If there is a date code in the bead area it is for the date of manufacture of the rim shell and not the completed wheel assembly and can be quite a bit earlier than the finished date by the valve stem. So, that is why the stampings in the bead area are of no importance because once you find the LZ code and date code around the valve, that gives all info needed, nothing else matters.

But hold on.
Shouldn't there be a way to to tell through the codes
if they will fit over the factory disc brakes?
I have a set of LY code all chrome SS-1
wheels that were made to fit over discs.
So I am thinking that these steel/chrome
LZ's will fit discs, yes?

So are those rims paintable? It looks like the chrome part is faded but I heard some were actually silver paint. I realize the black would make them pop but didn't know how one would get those rechromed just down the spokes.

I think they must have chromed the centers
and then pressed them onto the steel outers.
Because the centers are chrome, not painted.
And you are right, no way to rechrome without
either pressing out the centers or chroming the whole wheel.

On a side note, the center between the spokes
that is encompassed up to the center cap hole
is all chrome, just painted over the chrome in black.
and absolutly no chrome on the inside of the wheel.
I wonder how they did that as well.

So, guys, is there a way to tell
if these will fit over factory disc brakes
through a reading of the codes?
The easy way would be to try them.
However I don't have an a body here
with discs to do that. Thanks guys.

The 14 X 7 wheels should fit disc brakes but the 14 X 6 don't except for certain '69 14 X 6 wheels that do fit disc brakes. I have 14 X 7 wheels on my disc brake '68 442 convert.

All LZ code 14x7 wheels were made to fit factory disc brakes.

Because inquiring minds wanted to know.

Just a follow up on this thread guys.
I had a few fellows who wanted codes
for these wheels. All the codes posted
are from around the valve stems.
Beginning at the top left and going to
the right...
#1- M12 5 20 LZ
#2- M41 3 22 LZ
#3- M42 3 29 LZ
#4- M49 3 22 LZ
Bottom row...
#5- M49 11 13 LZ
#6- M41 3 22 LZ
#7- M41 3 22 LZ
#8- M4 11 13 LZ

#1- M12 5 20 LZ - can you confirm the "M12" with the stamp inside the wheel?
#4- M49 3 22 LZ - can you confirm this code - if accurate it would be a very early wheel (4 months before '70 production started)
#8- M4 11 13 LZ - is this another M49 like wheel #6?

Does anyone know where Motor Wheel Corp. plant #4 was located?

If that #4 was M41 322 you would have had a matched set of 4. I would double check that one because I am not sure LZ code wheels were being made that early in 69. A matched set would be much more desirable and much easier to sell for a #'s resto.
