I just had my 66 Toronado wheels blasted and powder coated. A local tire shop got in some thin white wall Cooper tires. They said the spare rim is a 15.5in rim whereas the other rims are true 15 in rims. What???? The tires fit on 4 rims but not the spare. Has anyone runacross this before? Does anyone sell a 15.5 in tire? Wondering what to do...

For the heck of it, did you measure your spare compared to your 4 others just in case the tire shop made a mistake?

What is the exact name of the cooper tire, I think I'd be interested in trying to find them for my '67 Toro.

Agree with Jeff. I would check it for yourself and possibly put in a call to the shop manager. Sounds like a mistake and not one a tire tech should make! I've never heard of a 15.5" tire or rim. Not impossible, but not likely. Why would they do that? Let us know what happens!

BTW, Jeff, the Cooper Trendsetter has a regular thin white wall stripe (.75"?). Available in many 15" sizes for "Legacy" cars like ours. Yeesh...sorry for the computerspeak.

That is the exact tire I just put on... Cooper Trendsetter SE in a 235/75-15. I have not measured the spare rim but I will. Interestingly enough the tire techs said the angled valve stems I got specifically for the 66 Toro wheels "won't physically fit" on the rims. So they put on straight ones.

Maybe I had the JV team at the tire shop. Maybe not even the JV team!

Has anyone put angled valve stems on their wheels? I have to imagine it would work.

I believe the angled valve stems are for the later disc brake wheel and not for the earlier drum brake wheel.

I know we had to use the "angled" for my 68.

Here is a picture of the valve stem for a "66 Toronado" that apparently doesn't fit my drum brake rims. I was too stupid to look at the stems that were on the rims when I took off the old tires. The valve stems the tire shop put on look out of place. Any photos of what the valve stems SHOULD look like would be appreciated.

1966 all and 1967 drum brake wheels use a standard rubber snap-in valve stem. 67 disc brake and 68-78 Toronado/Eldorado wheels use an angled metal valve stem similar to a truck. Has a rubber seal washer and a nut threads on the inside of the rim to hold it in place. Most have a black rubber or plastic cover on the exposed stem.

Pain in the ***, truth be known.
