im having the same problem wanting to run a 15x10 ss2 wheel with a 295/55/15 m/t et street radial is that possable ive had a 28/14.5 hooser quick time pro on a weld drag lite not sure of the back space tho any help or in put would be very helpful.

It will fit. A few guys are running that tire size under their 70-72. 15x10 with 5.5" backspace.

Hi,
I installed today my wheel's and tire's,
all I can say on a 1972 Cutlass 295/50 r15 fit like butter there is more room to grow for sure.
Car will be lowered 2" soon

Front will be 235/60r15 haven't installed them yet because I can't get the Cobra GT's here in Germany have to order them from the states but have already the rim's will be 15 x 8 / 4,5 BS the rim's in the back are 15 x 10 / 5,5 BS that is very important but that is the max BS you can go otherwise the rim will contact the the bolt of the shocks-mount

You can also easily run a 295/65/15 on a 15x8 with either a 4.25 or 4.75 BS or even a 15x10 5.5 BS if you wanted.

The car in my signature has 15x10 with 5.5 backspace and the 325/50/15 tire. I haven't rubbed on anything yet,but I have a stiff rear suspension with very little body roll. There are zero modifications to my fender wells.

There was a picture somewhere on here,of an aqua/teal car with these wheels.Very nice.
I ran the BFG drag radials before,without any issue,and now I have the Mickey Thompson version,no issues either.
I would run something around 27" for the front tire.

I agree about the large rims looking awkward & not conforming with the original design of the old muscle cars - keep them for the newer muscle cars. Oldsmobile had planned to install 15x7 SS-II rims with G-60 tires on the '70 Cutlass & 442, but for some unknown reason the option was cancelled in late August 1969. These were cancelled along with the light weight frame planned for the W-cars.

how big can you go on the 1970 442
with 15"x 7" on the ssIII rear?
its 235/60/r15 now On a lift it looks like only 3/4" clearance MAX from hitting the fender when lifter up all the way. I want taller and Wider.

I have seen 275-60s on 15x7 wheels on several cars at shows. That was a factory size combination on the Chevy 454SS truck.

The MT 255 60 15 drag radial is 27.0" tall on a 7.5" rim so it will be slightly taller on the OEM 15 x 7" wheel. This tire is a good choice for your 7" wide rims.

Front are Westlake blackwall a little smaller, I never heard of that brand before I saw on this 442m rear are firestone and pretty Burt out.


Hankook seems next reasonable for price...

That was fast, I do want some tread though for a couple long drives incase of rain. are the sportsman 275 60 16's Too wide on those then they look good but maybe truck tires idk enough to decifer

Many tire companies mould a 255 60 15 and all are roughly 27" tall & all will fit on your OEM 15 x 7" rim. I recommend the Sportsman ST tires & run them on two of my rides.

thanks my current tires are 28" already so I'll Wish for 29" and 10-10.5 wide. Hard to find unless a Offroad tire.

the 60's are really the same height as my current 235/70r15's

BFG makes a 275-60-15 (27.99" tall), it's a very common size for the rears and will fit fine on a 7" wide rim. Mine are mounted on an 8.5" rim.

i have 235/60-15 on the front of mine ,seems to work out ok
the back i have 255/60-15 all on stock cutlass wheels. but they spin like you wouldnt believe i just seen these from the summit link someone sent

Most are slicks or mudders for a tread witch of 10" and a 29" height.


Perelli looks good a 235/75r15 says tread width of 9.4 and 29.1 tall. doesn't say the section width, from the pic I'd gues 9.5 as tread rolls over.

General 265/70r15 looks Close as well Section width perfect at 10.7 but Tread width at only 8" seems like it may look funny? at 29" tall though. Makes it a tough call between those 2 $180 for better, or $150 for a little wider section.


Whats the Real look from the rear Seems like section is the Width you notice most? any pro-Lurkers out there with insight on what makes that rear view Wheel width stand out best?

What rear gears do you have & why do you need such a tall tire? There are plenty of 10 second cars hooking hard & running 10s on the 275 60 15.


Are you trying to get the "steam roller" look?. Because that is what you will end up with.

and extra inch would give a little better rake IMO.
the gears are 3.73 so yeas that little taller should get my @70mph
rpm down to 2700-2800.


also I would like to get the rear up a little because I'm tall and that gas tank filler I feel old reaching down lol.

F60-15 and L60-15 Polyglas would be a good matchup! Gives a bit of a rake and it is period correct!! 7" is as small in width as you would want to go with those tires. My cell is 816-654-3400.

WAY back when I was in High School I was running Polyglas H60's and F60's on my '70 Cutlass. Loved the look and the rake they gave. Then I switched to radials of the same size (245-60's) and now I am back to staggered sizes with the 295-50-15's in back and 265-50-15's in front.


I know everyone thinks that same model car all the same tires fit. Not necessarily. If you are choosing a tire size close to stock and only vary by a size or two you're probably fine. If you are looking to stuff the biggest, baddest rubber you can in your wheel wells then I suggest you measure. Cars differ in suspension settings, ride height, deteriorated stock bushings vs. new vs. polyurethane bushings, etc.


To prove my point, as I said earlier, I have 295-50-15's on the back and 265-50-15's on the front of my '70 W30. These tires do not hit anywhere. As that car is currently getting some work done I started driving my '67 Cutlass convertible. Got tired of the skinny tires and wire hubcaps so I tossed the tires off of the W30 on it. Everything was good except the front tires would rub on the inside of the frame when the wheel was turned fully. No problem, I just didn't turn far enough to rub.


So I jump in my '71 convertible and find out it has a couple tires with slipped belts. I know I need to lose weight but driving a car with slipped belts can make your head spin.... literally! LOL It feels like one of those vibrating weight loss machines from the 60's and 70's!! No problem, I'll take the tires from the W30 off of the 67 and pop 'em on the 71.


Cool, looks good... BUT. Yep, you knew there a but in there. The rears fit fine, the front tires don't hit the frame, they hit the top of the fender when you hit a bump and are turning (like I do when exiting my inclined driveway). So its a no go on that car.


I'm just saying, don't be lazy and look for someone to tell you the maximum tire size that will fit and not hit on YOUR car. Take a little time and measure things.

I have been researching these 325/50's fit on the 71-72 Cars, I see you are in fact running them ... however, - your car does NOT appear to be sitting at factory ride height in the rear. IF that rear was to be lowered to factory height - would rolling the fenders be required?

Ran across an old video of Brad Wise's Booger running at the track back in the late 90's - stock ride height and "appears" to have the 325's width on it. - The RIGHT LOOK...

Have 325/15's on the rear lowered a few inches with no rolling of the edges. I have 15x10 wheels with 5.5 back space.
