rim help
I really like the look of the stock 1972 442. I have a cutlass s that I plan to clone like a 442. Right now it has cragers on it and I want the rally look. I'm just not sure what would be right.
I found a guy with 2 different set of 14' rallys see pics
Now if I understand correctly ss11 came in grey? and ss111 came colored?
He called them ss11 but they are painted yellow.
also what is the big deal with 15'? is it just the look or is there a performance benifet to them?
Thanks for the help!

correct, SSIIs were painted argent silver and SSIIIs were the same rim painted the body color. the body color option came out in 1971 (though Ralley 350 rims were painted sebring yellow in 1970).
So the ones you are showing up on top are SSIIIs most likely - yes they are as they look to be the snap on center cap. Folks like 15 inch rims because they do offer a better ride and there are more choices of tires if originality is not what you are looking for. Not many 14inch choices out there but for most of us the brand/model of tire choice would be the same 14/15 anyways.
The bigger deal you may have caught on to is that there were only two years of 15 x 7 bolt on center cap SSII/SSIII (made in 73 and 74). After that there were plenty of 15 x 7 snap on center cap wheels with 14x7 rims being relatively common - bolt on and snap on center cap
