Spyder motor wheels on a GM A body
Hi
anybody have or previously had 14”x6” Spyder wheels by the motor wheel company on their gm A body?
i am thinking about putting them on my 71 442. Will they work with my factory disc brakes?
thanks

I'm sure that a famous white Buick Stage 2 car ran them back in the day but they were likely wider than 6". Pretty sure I saw this same car on display at MCACN last November, come to think of it. I'll look for my pics.

tv442 - Maybe you're familiar with the Spyder wheels....I don't know but...
>For our Abody bolt pattern they were produced in 14 and 15 sizes.
>BY FAR, the most common Spyder you'll find for sale will have a 6" rim width no matter if it's a 14" rim or 15" rim. Anything else, IMO, is EXTREMELY rare.
>The 15" Spyders have a larger OD aluminum center compared to the typical 14" Spyder. BUT....I've had a car here with 15" ORIGINAL (not rehooped) Spyders on it that had the larger center on the 15" rear wheels and the fronts, while still 15 inchers, utilized the smaller "typical 14" alum centers. Definitely an "oddity" and those fronts were really narrow at 5-1/2 or 5 inches of rim width.
I have one, and possibly two, of the 14" versions but I had one 14 rehooped many years ago to a 15" X 8 size. I'll do some digging and see if I have another original 14 incher. If I do it is a 14 x6 and I can see how it fits on an original disc brake '70 442.
The first one (maybe two) I bought many years ago is/are 14 inchers.....just don't remember if I got one or two before running across a bunch of 15 x 6 versions.
They are cool wheels....but the 6 inch width really limits the tire width and our cars can use plenty of width to fill up the big wheelwells. Buicks are MUCH WORSE in that regard...wheel openings are massive and smaller tires/wheels look odd on them.
Along came a Spyder........

Spyder wheels
Hi 70 post,
i do know about the wheels were made in 14” and 15”.
i have an opportunity to buy a set of 4 reasonably priced. I am just paranoid the 14”x6” won’t work with disc brakes.
If you have a 14”x 6” wheel and can check on a gm A body that would be great! Maybe take photo for me.
the owner of wheels said they came off 68 gto with disc brakes. But I do not know him.
Thanks, tv442

I can't seem to locate the mysterious "second 14" Motor Wheel Spyder" I thought I had.
I emailed a Buick guy I know very well and he sent me a pic showing his 14 x 6 Spyder mounted on the front end of his factory disc brake equipped '70 GS car. He says they "clear just fine....no problems".

Spyders
Hi,
I now am the proud owner of a set of 4 -14”x7” spyder wheels. Only 1 wheel has minor chrome peeling. Thanks for all your help and time.
now I just have to finish the car.

They're really not that hard to find. There always seem to be sets, pairs, etc all over ebay. IMO people either love the look or hate the look so it's not like there is a massive audience for these things. Caps in nice condition are harder to find and most have bubbling, etc in them. Rechrome cost on the caps can get very pricey. Add in cost of "re-hooping" them with shipping back and forth to a "re-hoop" place (on top of possible shipping if you buy some online) and the $ start to add up fast.

the above pic of 14 Spyder Wheels are all 15" 5x4.5" bolt circle Mopar/FoMoCo/AMC (3 sets of 15x6.0" & a pair of 15x8.0"), I have sold 2 sets of the 15x6.0" wheels
the majority of the original Spyders (made by Motor Wheel Corp. based in Lansing, MI & owned by Goodyear in the '70s) are 14x6.0" and 15x6.0" not ideal for today's desired tire sizes, RARE in other sizes
the center caps have been reproduced
as well as the lug nuts that are perceived as for Spyder Wheels, but they were originally made by Kelsey-Hayes

Stage 1 four speed with MW spiders.
Here's a pic of an A body with 15x8.5 wheels. They were custom made for this car in 1970 by the original owner who was an engineer at Motor Wheel in 1970.
