17" tire size help 1970 442
Hi,
I want to store my 14's with Repro G70-14 belted and get a set of radial tires to drive every day. Keep the SS1's for show duty. If I was going to do this, I wasn't going to get 15's because they are going the way of 14's with so few available.
I ordered a set of 17x7 & 17x8 with +0 offset. I want to keep as close to the same height tire as I have now, since I want a little sidewall. Coker lists my current tire at 26.8".
I was looking at a 225/50-17 on front & a 255/45/17 rear. Both are within an inch of what I have now.
Any other suggestions on sizes that will work with the rims selected?
Another thing is I have a new repro ILT exhaust system that I don't want to start tampering with Any input is greatly appreciated

Hi Ron.
The 255/45-17 has a load capacity nearly identical to what the factory installed on your car.
The 225/50-17 has about 10% less load capacity.
Given that most of the weight is over the front wheels and that the factory was't in the habit of wasting money on oversize tires, I'd say you need to match up load capacity when you select the front tires.

G70-14s are about 26.8" in diameter. Both 17" tires you are looking at are about an inch smaller in diameter - and this doesn't account for the fact that radial sidewalls deflect more than do those of bias ply tires, so the effective rolling radius will be even smaller.

G70x14 tires
I replaced some BFGs 225x70x14s for these G70x14" Wide Ovals
I would stick with 14" or 15" for that original look. 17" tires just don't have enough sidewall in my opinion.
