Wheel Widening

Anyone have a source for widening steel wheels?
I've got a set of SSII's non chrome, snap in cap that I would like widened to 8". I've been searching and have only come up with 1 source (weldcraft)

Specialty Wheel or Wheel Vintiques will make one. I was quoted $350 each for a chrome SS3 (with the snap on caps)

Stockton wheel may still do it. Marsh racing wheels can use your centers with new hoops, a better way that will give a true running wheel.

I know many people that have used Weldcraft and were satisfied. I used them for a repair and the work was excellent, plus they are 20 min from me.

Funkwagon455 made his own. Click on the link below, start at post number 30 and read on from there, they turned out very nice.

Joe,

Can Marsh supply the unique 15" hoops with the drop centers that mate up to the small diameter SSII/III wheel disks? That often seems to be the problem with custom SSII/III wheels.

Unfortunately, here would be the problem with that:

Rally America used to assemble the wheels but they had a fire in the facility a year ago that destroyed the equipment that they had used to do the work. Stockton was willing to do the conversion but they were going to cut two 15x8 shells to create a 15x10, making more work and more room for dimensional irregularities and points of failure. That plus the $265 each plus the shipping to and fro coupled with the reputation that they have earned for quality control made me more determined to find my own one piece version. According to Jimmy, Carlisle wheels in Ontario California may still offer the shells but by the pallet load only...Good luck!

I thought he might be able to get with Heath to see if he knew of any other sources.

Stockton should have 15x8" shells, if you have the confidence to safely build your own you could call them to see if they would sell the shells alone. I think that there are probably easier routes for what you are wanting though. If the 15x8" are available ready made, it will save you a lot of trouble. My version was 15x10" with a bolt on center,...a much taller order.

Thanks guys for the leads.
I was under the impression that Stockton wheel had gone out of business.
NOT SO. Just got off the phone with them and they would be able to accommodate me.
What I'm looking to do is cut the centers out of some 14's, with the bolt on caps, send them in and have them put into a 15x 8 hoop.
I did confirm that the SSII/SSIII wheels have a smaller inner diameter (Approx 12 3/8") and they have hoops to fit those available.
BTW their price wasn't unreasonable about 145 per wheel + shipping.

Did you happen to ask what widths other than 8" they have available?

Marsh hoops have a bigger "drop" in the center than standard so they can cut out OEM spiders from OEM wheels and use them with the new hoops.

Keep in mind that if you plan to run trim rings on widened SSII/III wheels, you have limited selection. There are rings that fit 15x8 Chevy wheels, but wider or more offset will be a problem. That's why the aftermarket 15x10 wheels are chrome.

I had never really thought about it, but I had purchased the last of Rally America's 10" wide shells..... You could give Jimmy a call to see if he has any 8" shells available. Regarding trim rings personally I have standard 15" Olds trim rings on my 10's. There is a painted area between the inner edge of the ring and the face of the wheel center, but I am actually fond of the look and think that it accentuates the depth. This is just my opinion though, perhaps I'm tacky... I do not think that the additional inch would be an issue with a standard ring and one could adjust this to their liking with backspace so long as tire clearance is not an issue.

Curt I'll give you a call in the future.
I'm getting ready to cut the hoops off a set of wheels.
Once I've got that done I'll be ready to ship them off.
Curious if you have 8" chrome hoops? thinking of doing these up like the 69 H/O wheels
