This wheel in a 15 x 8 says it has a back spacing of 5" and I was wondering if it can be used with a 275/60/15 tire and fit without any problems. I know it usually would need to be a 4 1/2 back spacing. Sorry to ask but I am new to your site and the best way to find out answers is to ask away. Thanks Rob

No one can answer this question for a new member. I had another about the 17" x 8" Ridler Rims and if you could run a 275 60 17 tire that is 29.9 inches tall but I guess since I am new here no one can help a guy out. Thanks and have a great day.

I have vintiques, 15x8 front and rear on my 72. 255/60/15, and 275/60/15. Fit great. They rust out quick though...

Sorry for forgetting the make and year of car and cars for the Ridlers. My Buddies car is a 70 W-30 442 ( a couple of pics was posted under my post being a newcomer to the group ) and is in the shop being redone right now and he was looking to get the new rims and tires before the car got back. As for the Vintiques he was looking at going from the 14" to 15's but if the doggone things rust right away he is not putting them on a car that is being redone to be a top notch car. My car is a 1971 Cutlass S so either way those are the rims we are or were looking at adding to the cars.

I can be as paitient as anyone for myself to a point, but I was asked to post this to the group on the 29th of January which I did for someone else and it may not pop to the top of anyones list but he was waiting on an answer to order the rims and tires. Sorry all..

The problem here is that backspacing can vary from one wheel style to the next even if both have the same offset. The problem is that backspacing includes the extra width of the wheel lip, and this is not necessarily common from one manufacturer (or even wheel style) to another. You are correct that for an 8" wheel, you'd expect about 4.5" backspace for a zero offset wheel. The 5" backspace means that the tire will sit slightly further inboard from the fender lip than for a 4.5" backspace. On the rears that probably won't be a problem.

Thanks Joe for the help. His rims as he was going to order are as follows. As for offset he did not give me that info but I presume 0 offset. Appreciate the help.
17 x 7" 4" BS 235 65 17 tires 9.3" wide 29" tall
17 x 8" 4 1/2" BS 275 60 17 tires 10.8" wide 29.9" tall

Assuming the wheel lip is about 1/2" (typical for a steel wheel), then 4" BS on a 7" rim and 4.5" BS on an 8" rim are just about zero offset.

I don't think Vintiques is making those rims in any size right now (the Chrome SSII's you have in your sig pic). I need one 15x7 and they quoted me $349 each and they have to custom make them. The only stock looking Olds rims that anyone is making now are SSI's

I have the same tire combination as yours. But I have 15x7 on the front. I have not had any problem with rust however.

New chrome always gets waxed. Then annually there after. Seal the pores up = no rust. Always nice to store our vintage iron in a dry if not heated environment.

I have this wheel from Specialty Wheel in 15 x 8 with 4.5" BS.


They have 275 60 15s mounted on the rims & I have had them on my 1970 W-31 & on my 1972 W-30. They fit perfect with no rubbing.

It was from eBay and it is a Summit sale Item Number 191751508480 so just put that in your search. It had me confused as well and why I asked the question to start with.

That ad also shows a +12mm offset - about 1/2" - which would be consistent with a 5" backspacing. Interesting.

Interesting,,, I just found out that the Coddington Junk Yard Dog wheels that Summit sells on Ebay, are China made copies. I talked to Chris Coddington yesterday and he said that a portion of the "Coddington" name was sold and that's what they are doing. He however is in business as "Son of Boyd" and are still making Junk Yard Dogs here in USA. He says there is a real difference in quality and finish that you can see, and they cost about twice as much at the China stuff.
Wonder if something similar is true for the SSI your looking at from Summit?

On Wheel Vintiques site the size listing is a drop down box. They show 2 different 15X8, one with 4.5 back space and one with 5" back space. I have also been curious about this for my 67, as i want to put the largest wheel/tire combo on the rear that will fit.

Keep in mind that the 1967 Cutlass line came with the wider Type O housing - it's exactly the same housing P/N as the one for the 1968 cars. This application would benefit from the extra positive offset provided by the 5" backspacing instead of the 4.5".

So with 15X8, 5" back space, could i use a larger tire than the 275 60R 15? For my 67? I want the tallest widest tire i can safely run, in the rear. Mickey Thompson has a couple that might work.
