Front drum brake hub?

Hi!

The race spung the hub on our 442 from 1969 and I got hold of two hubs from a 1969 Cutlass S also with front drum brake. If you look att the picture, 442 hub is to the left and Cutlass S to the right, they don't look the same? There's a difference in 0.24" (6mm). Maybe it dosen't matter but what will happen to the drum and the brake pads? And why is there a difference between hubs from the same year?

Stefan

I could be wrong, but I would think the position of the inner race would be more relevant. The one on the right may just have more material on the back side but if the inner race sat 6mm deeper in it would place the wheel surface in the same place as the other. Just a thought.

I assume these are both the same type of hub and one is not from a disc brake set up and the other from a drum brake with the drum pressed off.

Arrow Check a bit more

You may have the answer already. It's possible that one is original and the other is an aftermarket. Both may work. You probably should put them on the spindle and compare how they fit. Check the distance from the face of the hub's flange to the backing plate for each. The Oldsmobile parts book doesn't show any difference between the 442 and the Cutlass S for 1969 drum brakes. The only difference which shows is between the USA version and the Canadian version. Those have two different part numbers.

I may have a set of drum brakes in the garage that I would let go for shipping if this is a problem. They came off of a 72, but that shouldn't matter.
I have to check that they are still there...mind is failing me in my old age. Lol.

The hub to the left in the picture is from a Firebird 68. Just found It on the Internet. The Hub to the right in the picture, from a Cutlass 69, has a part number that, s start with 30 and the last digit is 7. I know that part nummer should be 3887867 or replacement number 3880987.

As I responded on the other forum, either hub will work fine. The dimension from the wheel mounting surface to the inboard face of the hub is irrelevant, as that face doesn't bottom on anything. The relevant dimension is from the wheel mounting surface to the seat for the inner bearing race on the inside of the hub.
