w-30 vista cruiser at car show

I went to the last Cruise in Grand in my hometown and they had Nittro night theme were they had drag car going down the street very loud by the way. I noticed this Vista Cruiser (later used to push one of the drag cars down the street) with 442 grill, red inner fender and W-30 badge. I was wondering if this was factory or somebody put this together what are your thoughts?

Sort of reminds you of a certain '68 Hurst/Olds FlatTop Wagon, doesn't it? I'd say someone did an excellent job.......................not factory.

This is an example of what Olds SHOULD have made. I have seen several wagons in W-30 dress and I like them.

Cool looking car, I'd like to see it in person.
I too have seen some 442/w30 Vistas & that's why I decided to "make" a Vista SX. Yeah, they never made one, but if they did, this is my version of it.
Todd Harroun? has a very nice medical directors Vista from the '72 Indy 500. It has a lot paperwork & seems to be totally optioned out.
Thanks for sharing.

I wonder what that Vista SX would look like without the wood grain and with the wide chrome trim down the side and a Halo style vinyl top.

I always thought a Rallye 350 wagon would be cool.

Rallye 425...

What's with the fuglias black square? Ensure mileage doesn't get into double digits [i.e. 9 mpg or less] ??

I was wondering the same thing! I kinda speculating here, but looking at it, appears to be a pusher of some sort? Working back words the pad appears to have wear marks and the flat top screws are countersunk. Pad has a thick backer for support and strength and the square stock appears to be pretty stout and gusseted.

A couple of other theories, the person has a depth perception problem when parking or he uses it to butt up against something and do burnouts!

But to kill the last two are why so high!

That is a pretty nice car. I don't think the faux wood panelling goes well with the W30 theme though. Too bad Olds never made a tricked out version of the Vista Crusier.

Not sure why everyone's part of the "I like it" brigade because it's just a wagon with a W-25 hood and W-30 badges stuck on. Ho-hum. They could have made a real W-30 wagon like what appeared in the magazines in 1970 but didn't. At least remove the W-30 badges and make it a "wagon with a W-25" and it could be a bit more interesting.

They used that to push the drag car in the background down the street.

There are only two "W-30" wagons documented as being built by the factory, and both were hand-built press cars not offered for production.

There was the 1968 Vista with the 68 H/O drivetrain (including red inner fenders and under-bumper scoops). This car was passed around to several car magazines in 1968, being famously written up by Car and Driver as "Son of Boss Wagon" (their original Boss Wagon was a built up 1966 Plymouth wagon).

The other one was a 1970 flattop wagon with a W-30 drivetrain, also featured in several car magazines in 1970.

That is cool. It would be interesting to read those old car magazine articles.

I don't agree, doesn't mean I'm right and you're wrong or vice versa though.
Anyone who likes old cars would take a second look at this one, I think the understated W30 decals suit it very well. I think it shouldn't look to "hot rod", but then sleepers always make me smile.

I've got no wood for a 70-72 Vista without wood.

I saw a 1970 W-30 vista at the Mondello property that I inspected for a possible purchase last year. It had a pile of documentation authenticating it. Unfortunately, the price was too high.

Authenticating it was a true w30 wagon. It had original build sheets and magazine test articles dating back to 1970. W30's are easy to fake, so you need a detailed paper trail to confirm it is the real thing. It also was owned by joe mondello's wife which always helps.

I toured the Mondello facility a few years back with our local Olds club and Joe showed us that wagon in his garage. Very nice car. How much was his wife asking for it last year? I also got some pics of the car. I know everyone likes pics!

Not sure of Mondello's car, but wouldn't it be a engineering car and not a wagon with the W-30 installed at the factory?

Wasn't there at least three documented Vistas that were ordered with W25? No idea on W30 but doesn't Berejik have a brown one?

Here's the 71 Vista I'm working on (again)

Got this back from paint shop in 2008. Worked on it for about 15 months and got frustrated, so I just through the car cover over it. Started back in on it over Christmas break. Got it out and drove it for the 1st time since '08 last Saturday (1-11-14), and took these pics. Discovered more issues I need to address. No Interior yet.

That's the one. I stopped over to make her an offer. She was so high past 6 digits, I thanked her for her time and didn't bother with giving an offer.
