Vista Qs

I picked up a 70 455 for cheap, it is a 4 bbl has E heads w/x manifolds etc..

so..heres the question..was a 4 bbl 455 avail in a 70 Vista? and which 400 turbo? seems to me it would be a short shaft but it has a long tail...

the car was parted in 73 a tree fell on it and killed it at 18k miles...the orig owner pulled the motor and they kept it til i picked it up last week...the story seems true, but..i dunno..the orig owner was this guys brother, and its bounced around the family since 73, never making it back in a car..now they are old, so i got the whole thing for $100 bux..only thing missing is the distributor

so..which tranny?..it is an Abody, so did it get the long tail??doesnt seem right...and did VCs get the 4bbl 455 like in a 442?

i guess i need to start scraping numbers..

You probably know but there were three different tail housing for the turbo 400 and the Vista either got the medium or the long one I forget which. Definitely not the shortest one.

X2 on the long tail. Even the Vista with a TH350 had a long tail. I believe it is the only TH350 long tail made? I was told and never had the opportunity to find out but I am told that a Vista with a 455 4 bbl had the big valves. If the engine is ever pulled apart it would be something to check.

All Vistas got long-tail transmissions (the only A-body that did) due to the extra 5" of wheelbase. B-body cars with small blocks also got long-tail TH350s in low HP applications (those may have actually been TH375B transmissions - not to be confused with the TH375 based on the TH400).

The only 455 offered in the Vista in 1970 was the L31 365 HP motor. This was 4bbl. Not sure about the big valves, but I think they were. The exhaust manifolds on every single A-body with 455 from 1969-1972 were W/Z from the factory.

oops..it is w/z..typo

this would classify as medium tail..just never knew it..i figured it would come with a short because its an a-body

even though its a low miles, and been stored inside for ever, it has to come apart...so the heads will be off tomorrow..ill let ya know what valves

has a 251 carb, notched valve covers etc etc..neat piece..

thanks for all the help

long tail T350?

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the 5.7L diesel 1500 series trucks come with a long tail T350?

The TH400 and TH350 came in "short tail", what it commonly called "long tail", and the "really long tail" versions that were only used in trucks.
