53 Fuel Pump Filter

Can anyone tell me if this type of fuel filter which sits in the glass bowl is still available? or at least some sort of modern equivalent? I tried Fusick and they just suggested adding an in-line filter between the tank and the pump.

Hi Nigel
The filter in my glass bowl is more like a flatround net type in brass, might differ depending of pump brand?
I think mine was AC-Delco but might be wrong…

If your pursuit doesn't work, this may help. The Olds parts book shows for Group 3.929, STRAINER-GASKET, FUEL PUMP, 1949-1954 8-cyl., strainer & magnet, part number 5593726. And 1955-56 and 1957-58 partial, strainer w/bowl gasket, part number 5620861. Both of these numbers are revisions. The part number for the gasket only is 5593455. Both of these filters are difficult to find in new condition. The newer version may also fit yours. A currently produced filter which may work is number 33034 by Wix. They claim that it will substitute for both of the AC filters. Many rebuilt pumps were supplied with a less effective brass screen. The photos show the pump for the '55 and the 5620861 filter. Also shown is the Wix 33034 filter. I have not yet tried the Wix filter.

Ozzie the first two pics would be exactly what I need, the only difference being that the filter is stone rather than paper, Rock Auto have that one in the last pic, I had found that already, but it differs in size and wouldn't fit in the bowl....where did you get the kit in the first pics?

What you see in the first two photos came together as a new replacement AC fuel pump for the '55. The filter is what had been sold as the part number 5620861. The filter media on that filter has a weight like paper; it is a "molded" sort of material which would appear to have a micron rating similar to paper. I don't know of anywhere that filter is available. If the Wix filter fits on the pump correctly, and the only problem is that it won't fit in the bowl, perhaps the bowl could be exchanged for another that has a more "squarish" or wider bottom. See the photo. Some bowls were made with "ledges" on the inside of the glass which seem to indicate that they were intended to support a filter.

Much appreciated Ozzie, I think i'll buy that corrugated paper one and see if I have any luck with it, the only other issue would be that circular piece of paper with the holes in it, the replacements don't seem to come with a new one of those...perhaps that's part of the revised style.

The 5620861 filter had a metal "frame". The round paper with the holes in it was placed between the filter and the pump's body so as to provide a seal to keep the fuel flowing correctly through the filter instead of bypassing the media. This portion of the Wix filter is made of paper. If the Wix could be made to work otherwise, that separate paper seal would probably not be needed. I suppose that might be the reason that Wix only provides the bowl gasket with the filter. If you have the filter and the pump off the engine you will be able to study it carefully to check the fit and see what type of bowl would be needed. If you'd like dimensions on the 33034 look here:
http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/Par...spx?Part=57372
If you'd like to see the applications look here:

Well i've bought one, and along with the pump rebuild kit coming from Fusick....it should be sweet.
There's great info here, this thread will surely be of use to anyone else who finds themselves in need of a replacement filter.

Thanks a million.

I believe I have 1 or 2 remaining of the original design you illustrate.... I also have
about a dozen remaining of the nice one with the rounded top which is the common
one inside the glass bowls --- both of them are N.O.S. ++ ONLY ++ and are gone
when they are gone -- and I have the regular paper one as illustrated in that other
message to you -- those I still buy by the case (in Hastings -- those are available in
a bunch of brands...)

I have added a modern metal can style filter before my fuel pump just encase of I get contaminated gas or if something breaks fee from my antique gas lines. It lays below the pump and is mostly out of sight, I've never lost a point in any show including the Nationals so it's not obvious. That is always a option or a little extra insurance if you have doubts on your fuel system..... Tedd

Well I used one of those corrugated paper filters, and I have to say I wasn't impressed, the hole on top that is supposed to fit over the end of the pump inside the bowl is too small...it got chewed up, so I binned it and put the original back on.

Looks like I'm jumping in a little late here. I could have saved Eightbanger some time and money. I've already been down the the Wix 33034 filter 'should' work path, with the same result. The opening in the hole at the top of the Wix filter is a smaller diameter than tube protruding on the pump housing that it is supposed to fit over.

Cudos to Ozzie. He has done his homework well and has provided the correct part numbers. Here is what I have found (everything agrees with Ozzie):

Group 3.900 PUMP ASSY., ENGINE FUEL & VACUUM
1949 thru 1954 8-Cyl. .................................................. ........................................... 5591621 (AC 9294)
1955 thru 1957 1st type; 1958 exc. C.A.C.* .. W/strainer & glass bowl........................... 5621656 (AC 4317)

*Note - When ordering fuel pump 5621656 for 1955 & 1956 models also order (1) part no. 444024 reducer bushing.

Group 3.904 PUMP ASSY., ENGINE FUEL & VACUUM
1949 thru 1960 ......................................... GASKET, strainer bowl (1958 & 59 exc.
C.A.C) .................................................. .................................................. ............... 5590039
1955 thru 1957 1st type; 1958 exc. C.A.C.* .. GASKET, strainer.................................... 5593455

Group 3.910 STRAINER, FUEL PUMP
1949 thru 1954 .......................................... STRAINER & MAGNET ............................ 5593726 (AC FP-52)
1955 thru 1957 1st type; 1959 & 1960 exc.
C.A.C. .................................................. ..... STRAINER (W/bowl gasket)
.................................................. .................................................. ......................... 5620861 (AC FP-57)

I have found the Fel-Pro Gasket Part No. 5019 works for 5590039 for the glass bowl to fuel pump housing gasket.

The 5620861 is the 1955 - 1957 1st type filter and is a rounded filter that has some type of 'porous stone-like' media and looks like an upside-down volcano (when installed). The 5593726 1949 - 1954 strainer and magnet, is the metal framed filter that has some type of laminations for the media and is held together by what looks like brass rivets through the top and bottom plates. I have one of each. If you are interested in buying one, please PM me. I originally found the 55-57 filter in my 49 Ninety-Eight and it seemed to work fine, until it got plugged-up. So I believe that either filter will work on all V8 Oldsmobiles (303 and 324) from 1949 to 1957 1st type, although I'm sure the early metal ones (PN 5593726) were more expensive, especially with the magnet included.
