47 Coupe dash width question
#2
I think they are the same. My parts book doesn't show the sheet metal 'dash' that the instrument panel, radio, glove box etc. fasten to, but it does show all those parts are being interchangeable between 60 and 70 series and even some parts like glove box door being interchangeable across all series.
This link: http://classiccardatabase.com/postwa...Oldsmobile.php shows about 1/2 inch difference in width between the models you mention. I'd bet there is no difference in width--just someone back then rounding up a decimal to nearest whole number.
Sounds like you are trying to put a 76 sedan dash into your 66 coupe? Why not ask one someone with a 70 series car to measure the dash width and fastener hole locations? Good luck with your project.

Thanx Jerry. I am looking for a dash to fit my car, but haven't had any luck finding one. The 76 Sedan one came up on ebay, and I wasn't sure if it would fit or not. I have the classic car database saved in a favorites folder, but never though to look for the dimensions there!
When I first got this car it was, and still is, my intention to build a street rod out of it. I was planning on using an aftermarket dash made by Bitchin' Products, but they seem to have disappeared! I sold off a lot of the stock pieces, including the dash, and now I find I'm in need of it. I have a couple feelers out right now with some local old car junkyards, but haven't heard anything yet. I might go with a chevy dash, as that seems to be easier to find. Time will tell.
In the meantime, any 70 series owners here that could take some measurements for me?

Its not clear to me whether you are looking for just the gauge pod that holds the instruments or the whole dash from door to door? If it is the gauge pod with the instruments in it, I may have a lead for you. Actually I might have a lead on either or both. Send me an email through the site if interested. The only dash part I have is the large chrome plate that fits over the metal dash from one side to the other. Its surplus to me and useable for a driver.

Do you still need measurements from a 70 series? I can go get some for you, I am getting ready to go out and start working on the car for the evening.

Sure! I think the most important measurement is going to be the width at the top front, and the width at bottom front, plus the depth from front to back at the middle. If you can get those for me I'd sure appreciate it!

Here are the measurements I got:
Bottom width 50 1/2" (from kick panel to kick panel)
Top Width 49" (top edge where it meets the A pillar)
Depth @ Middle ~6" (from window frame to flush with front of dash)
Hopefully theses are enough for you to determine whether 60 and 70 series are interchangeable.

Thanks! That will certainly give me a good place to start. I will measure up the "hole" where my dash should be and see how it compares with your measurements. I will let you know what I find.

Well, I just measured my dash opening and came up with about 47" across the top and about the same, maybe a 1/2" wider, at the bottom. Guess a 70 series dash won't fit in a 66 coupe based on the numbers you got, Jenni. Thank you for taking the time to measure it!

I know you haven't found your dash yet, but here is a part you may be interested in:

Thanks Jenni, I sent them an email asking which model the dash came from. I can tell you this though, my model 66 coupe did not have a cutout in the chrome piece for the steering shaft, so I'm not sure this is going to fit my car. I'm not sure, but I think maybe that came out of a 98? I'll let you know what they answer.
