I have the Body Number and VIN plates for my basket case 1946 Olds 98 Custom Cruiser body style 3907.
The information that I have states that the Oldsmobile C body, Body Number Plate goes on the left cowl side of the car. I am having no luck matching any holes in this area that match up to the plate.
I would like to place these 2 tags as close as possible to their original positions but metal replacement has removed the original mounting holes. Does anyone have a photos or information where the body plate and my VIN tags should be located?

This is the best pic I could find of a 1946 one online. You can see the data plate in the upper right of the pic. For what it's worth, my 47 has it in the same spot. Hope it helps.

Yes the long skinny one and I'm pretty sure it is the VIN. My old Chryslers have them usually mounted on a door pillar. Not sure on the Oldsmobile.

I'm probably wrong! I will have to dig mine out tomorrow and look at it. My firewall is currently bare as I just painted it and removed everything on it. Here's another pic that shows the tag a little better, even though it's painted, you can see it above the large data plate.

Do you know what pound rating the radiator cap should be for the straight 8? Started my car up for the first time today and she was spitting out the rad overflow. Mine is a tired looking 4 lbs unit. Doing a search Oldsmobile Obsolete lists a 7lbs one for Buicks and Packards but does not list the 46 Olds.

Sorry, mine is a bit non-original. I have an Olds 350 for it and the original motor is long gone!

I mistook the picture of the straight 6 as your car.
Looks like the cap is supposed to be a R5 4lbs cap.

Does your VIN tag look like this? I didn't think this was a VIN because it's such a short set of digits!

Yes. Mine has the same set up, my VIN registration starts with 98 then an 0 and then the 5 numbers of the serial number.
Does your registration start with 66 (series) a number or letter and do the last 5 numbers match your registration?
Where was your tag located? Information I found for '46 C bodies was inside left dash.

I've never had the car registered, it's in about a million pieces right now! That tag was located just above the data plate just like in the under hood pic I posted.

I found a photo of the car before it was dismantled. It looks like only the narrow VIN tag is located on the left side firewall on the 1946 C bodies. Some research suggests some cars of this era had the data tags on the interior floor on the drivers side?

On the floor? Seems like an odd place to put it!

I think I will just mount both of mine together on the firewall. I don't have a regulator mounted there anymore and its not like the car is original.

47 Convertible

Dennis, apparently it wasn't restricted to Oldsmobiles. My previous project was a 1936 Chevrolet Master 2 dr. When I got it II looked in vain for the vehicle's ID tag only to find out that it was located by the factory on the passenger side floorboard.

That same floorboard held the cover for the battery compartment. Battery was accessed by taking that cover off. To make it even more strange the ID tag was made of aluminum with the ID stamped on that thin bit of aluminum. It was almost as if GM placed it in the area most likely to cause it to chemically erode or be scraped illegible by grit carried to the floorboard by passenger shoes. I moved my ID tag to inside of glove box door where I figured it stood the least chance of abuse.
