Dose anyone know where I can buy the correct fuel tank for my 1948 series 78 Dynamic Club Sedan? It's style number is 48-3607. When I bought the car it had an incorrect tank, so I don't even know what the correct tank looks like. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Tanks Inc. http://www.tanksinc.com/ helped me with a tank for my 1947 series 68 but it took some measuring as they don't have Oldsmobile tanks going back that far but the person who helped me fixed me up with a tank made for a Buick, which also has the filler connector on the correct (driver) side of the car. All I had to do was tell them where along the side of the tank the fuel filler tube had to fit , i.e., toward the front, middle or rear of that driver side of the tank.

You will be able to look under your car and see the recess where the tank normally fits and also see where the fuel filler hose would most logically intercept the side of the tank by eyeballing. You could also use a carpenter square and a plumb bob. Lower plumb bob to ground holding string in the center of your fuel door opening and make a mark on ground. Set one side of square parallel to side of your car and see where the other side would intersect a fuel tank if it was installed. Using the same kind of measurement I was able to tell Tanks where the filler piece should intersect the tank. The Buick tank with the fuel filler piece and mounting hardware arrived in about two weeks and fit like a stock tank.

Your 78 series is the same basic body as the Buick 40 series for 1948 according to my Fisher Body Service Division Body Manual for 1946-1948. Tanks Inc. might find that helpful if they don't already have that information.

Paul,do you think a tank for a '48 Chevrolet car might be the same. If so Chevies of The 40's show a steel stamped tank for all Chevy car except 3 Pass. Coupe and sedan Delivery for $149. You might take a look. Larry

The Oldsmobile chassis parts book says that the part number should be 419920 and should also fit the 1941-1947 exc. 98 and exc. station wagon, but nothing newer. That part number doesn't appear in the Chevrolet chassis parts book under the same group number (3.001).

47 Convertible

Chevy fuel tank filler hose and gas cap are on passenger side. Olds is on driver side. So its not going to work as a substitute.
