1955 grille/bumper trim problems

Hi I was hoping you all may be able to help me figure out which of these two pieces of bumper trim is the correct one. They both are very similar but not quite the same. The rusty one came with the car when I bought it but was not on the car at the time. The shiny one I bought just recently. But when I put them side by side there are some differences. The shiny one is thicker in some places as I try to show in the pictures it is also heavier than the rusty one and has a number stamped on the back R-6232-1 and another one below that 4292. The rusty one has no such numbers. I just want to figure out which figure out which of the two is correct for a 1955 Oldsmobile 98. Thanks for any help you all can provide.

Wow. I've never seen that much difference between grill parts and a I thought all 55 front grill parts were the same, regular, supers and ninety eights.I am wondering if one is a 54 and not a 55. How does it look against the far side?

Perhaps someone with a Hollander could look up that number and see if it matches your year and car.... Just a thought.... Tedd

I would think only one of those will match up with the hood lip? That's a large difference.....

Hi again thanks for the responses. Yeah I was surprised by the difference as well. Unfortunately I don't have the hood lip to compare it against. But if one of you guys who have a 55 could measure that top rib of the part on yours I could compare the measurement to mine and see which of my parts is closer. I would really appreciate it thanks.

My hood lip measures 0.94" wide at the end on that top surface.

Thank you very much jozw30 for measuring that. Unfortunately that means that the rusty one must be correct as it measured 0.943''. While the shiny one measures 1.172''. I was kind of hoping that if one had to be wrong it would be the one in worse shape. But at least now I know. Now I just have to figure out what the shiny one is off of thanks again.

Maybe they changed those parts mid year or something? Can't imagine what other model that larger size would be for?

Had a chance to measure originals off an S88, and NOS pieces last weekend. All were the same and under 1.00 inch. Only guess my dad had was that maybe the 98s were wider? Couldn't think of any other car that had that exact same shape piece of trim.

98's should be the same as all the rest of the 88 series. Have you looked at a 56 the hood lip is different (thinner) on a 56 maybe that is the answer..... Just a thought.... Tedd
