1961 Starfire Spare Tire Stowage???

I couldn't find the "Remedial and Stupid Questions" Forum, so I'm posting here...

Does anyone have a photo of how the spare tire is stowed on a 61? I can't find it in the service or owner's manual and there is no decal - only how to jack the car.

Much appreciated.

There appears to be some difference of opinion on the jack location.

OK, more research shows that the correct method is mounting the jack parallel to the rear panel, as shown in the second photo above. This drawing is from the factory parts book.

First - thanks Joe for such a quick reply.

The jack is still in place so i'm all set there...it's the stupid wheel.

Using this pic (cropped from what you sent) - that is what I was trying to accomplish.

When I put the "base" over the "Bolt" and thread on the wing "nut", there isn't enough "Bolt" length to fasten the "retainer" that holds the "cover" - I'll snap a few pictures when I get home.

What size tire is on the spare? Stock would have been the 8.50x14, with an 8.50" section width. Anything wider than 225 will raise that cover and make it difficult to start the retainer on the J-bolt.

That's a good thought...but I checked and it's a 215/75.

As you can see by the photos, with the "base" installed and the "nut" in place, there's no way to get the retainer installed...almost as if there should have been an extension from that "nut" up to the "retainer"?

Also included a photo of the jack stowage which appears to me to be original (this trunk has all the original cardboard and mat). It really seems like the J bolt was replaced with a shorter one, but my dad (he bought from the original owner in 1980) has no recollection of changing that.

I guess I keep trying and hoping for that "eureka" moment.

215/75

I believe this is the factory setup for the jack stowage

J-bolt thread clearance with 'base' installed - I can thread the 'nut' on but not the 'retainer'

With the "base" and "nut" installed...

Looks like you have the wrong J-hook. They come in different lengths.
