1946, 1947, 1948 Olds owners - I want your opinions.

I am in the process of rebuilding a website that I once had for essentially the first 50 years of Oldsmobile, with a STRONG concentration on 1946, 1947, and 1948 Oldsmobiles.

I recently posted some links to brochures and advertisements for vehicles of 1939 - 1949 Oldsmobile that may be of interest to some of you... Check it out at MyMerryOldsmobile.blogspot.com

My question to you would be, what would you like to see on a website that could be valuable or enjoyable to see for your own gain or reference?

Thanks in advance!

Interesting idea. I'd have to hear a lot more about what is proposed before contributing ideas. I don't know how anyone as busy as you appear to be would have time to develop a site, keep it updated and moderate it to keep unrelated subjects, ads, porno advertising etc. out of it and keep it something kids and wives could read. Why not just work to improve CO Vintage models forum?

CO Vintage models forum has a different dynamic than what I am trying to create. CO Vintage models forum seems to me a social site that a person comes to visit, ask a question, and possibly get an answer... and if the question was asked before by a different person, their answer may or may not have had a slightly different response.

I am trying to create a point to reference. A spot that a person can use as a guide and reference that has:

original advertisements,
paint color combinations / chip availability,
upholstery references,
interchangeability information,
Vehicle repair manuals (Body / Chassis / Engine)
vin and body tag decoding information,
video clips,
restoration tips / tricks, and how to's
and more...

It would be a library of sorts, that also has a page of links to parts, pieces, and sources to aid in a restoration.

The Menu would be an index of sorts, with a standard to restore and judge by.

The help I would be looking for would include materials that others have found and possibly scanned as an electronic copy (so it can be made available to all).

As time goes on, the materials get harder to find and more expensive to acquire. Having a free site, with free information, with general guidance of how to would be beneficial.

The site would not be a replacement for this Forum but to be used as a tool to assist the forum for a source of consistent and accurate reference.

The idea and construction of the site I have in mind is still in a rough state, and will take some years to fully develop and refine, but as you see, pre-1950 activity and materials is some of the most difficult to acquire or find... and I would like to change that.

This is an idea that is still forming.... do you have any thoughts??

Thanks,

Actually I've gotten a lot more out of the Vintage cars forum than a social visiting site with the occasional question answered. With over 300 posts in the 46-48 thread people have located parts, shared how-to information and I've personally used my Hollanders Interchange to provide interchangeability information in four different countries to participants in the Vintage forum. The only limitation I find with it is both the search and buying/selling functions would be better if they were specific to groups of years -- like 41-48 for example. But then you always have people like me who hot rod their Oldsmobile and need to find information on big block oldsmobile engines, newer transmissions, different suspension setups from different eras and so forth. So while I'm keen on the Vintage forum and in particular the 46-48 thread, I use a lot of the rest of what is available on CO. With the engines, electrical, body and paint and other sections you can bore down about as specific as you want to be.

The moderators of CO, volunteers all, are aware of the limitations which are, for the most part, built into the architecture of the site. Trying to cover all years of Oldsmobiles is a formidable task.

You seem to have thought through most of what you want out of a pre-50s Olds site and I really don't have much to add. Let us know when you launch it and I'm sure if people find it useful they will use it just as they use CO.

The thought is there, but I do not have all of the content to create this library.

So If you have an electronic copy of an interchange manual, or advertisements, or repair manuals, etc that I can make public for all to use, this would be great!

Also, if you have a restoration tip, trick, or how to that you think would be beneficial to know, that would be useful too (Especially if it is a tip that you see on CO that might get lost with the ever added posts - ie, how to remove chrome trim, how to replicate the front floor mat when a mat is no longer available, etc).

Since this information will keep coming up, the website will grow although the posted information would be organized (appearing static) for an easy find.

Check in as I add to the site, and see it grow. Remember in 2004 when this CO site formed, it was quite dead, and 10 years later... it is starting to pick up. It wont happen overnight, but it would be a useful reference tool.

I'm not a lawyer so this is not legal advice, but be careful what you replicate and make available publicly. Hollander Interchange Manual, for example, is copyright material as are most catalogs, parts books etc. A copyright protects against copying and distributing including by electronic means, unless there is written permission.

True, some of that we will have to be careful on, however... a lot of what is done would be a more specific version of http://www.oldcarmanualproject.com/

advertisements, brochures, and factory stuff that has been out of print as well as added users "helpful" restoration tips specifically to the older oldsmobiles.

I think a lot can be done for a "go to resource" as a supplement to this site.

I personally would like to see that! By the way-I just rebuilt my AC 535 fuel pump. I still have to prime the Carb in order to start my 48 78 w/L8 engine. The vehicle will run forever but just has to be primed every time I start it. ANy helpful suggestions?

a small amount of fuel is supposed to stay in the carburetor to be there as your "prime".

If the vehicle sits for a certain amount of time, that fuel drains out and is not there to help get your vehicle started, and then needs to be primed again. Although it is difficult to be certain without looking at the vehicle, it sounds like the issue is in your carb. (an area to investigate).

Let me know what you find.

Great idea. I hope you launch the site!
Myself, I have a 1937 L37-3811 two door touring sedan with trunk. It has the L-head straight 8 and I'm in need of an intact exhaust manifold. It is my understanding that '37 thru '48 L-head 8's all used the same exhaust manifold. Any help much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Russ
