should I get new TQ higher stall

Putting 300hp+ SBO in a 79 T/A. cam is this 278/282 .430/.432.
T/A has a stock TC & a TH350 (automatic), stock 15", stock 2.73 gearing ratio.
Looking at using a 3.23 gear (just posted gear question on other sub thread this section)

motor to put in was rated 320hp
------------------------
It will be street cruiser first.... some highway so decent manners preferred.... mpg not a concern as long as its above 12mpg
-------------------------

Should I get a new TQ converter while the motor is out? The motor is significantly more HP than the stock 403. not sure how the stock TQ converter will effect me or what an updated TQ will provide me?

With the higher cam /higher compression of the 300hp+ motor, does the cam need degreed with 3.08 gearing or 3.23 and stock TQ converter?

Not sure which orig. cam was in the stock 403 being shelved ... but found these were
.403 stock cam = low Perf = 250/264 400/400 #562299 <<<----- I assume stock 79 was this one ?
403 stock cam = Reg Perf = 286/287 474/472 #562302
403 stock cam = High Perf = 294/296 474/474 #562301

Thanks in advance ~J

Don’t need to but it will be happier with something a little higher than stock. That baby cam won’t care if it’s stock or not but yeah, while you’re in there, may as well get the car moving. Something below 2400rpm stall will still be fun and get decent mileage.

Call Coan, TCI, Hughes, etc any other then would be able to either build a custom converter for your application, or would be able to recommend an off the shelf converter. Try to have as much information about the car as possible, things like total weight, exact tire diameter, what gear ratio you have, and what ratio your considering changing to, what your goals are with the car, the more info you have, the easier it is to pick a perfect match.

Yah the stock converter blows, I noticed a huge difference going from a 2300 flash stall in front of a 2004R to a stock 1600 flash stall in front of a TH350 sucks ***, only has crappy 2.78 gears . Do it, along with the better gearing will really move compared to stock

Sluggish off the line acceleration.

I have a Hughes 2500 RPM converter and it feels just like the factory converter until I stomp on it.
