84 delta 88 455 transmission

hey all I am building a 455 to replace my 307 (thinking around 500hp out of 455). And need some help selecting which trans to rebuild to match up to the motor. I have the 2004r metric that bolted to the 307 which I have heard good things about , I also have the thm400 that bolted to the 455. My plans for the car is autocross and cruising with the occasional visit to the strip. Any advice would be great !! Thanks !!

It's going to cost a little, but build the 200 4R. You'll be glad that you did.

I have well built 200-4R in my 64 F-85 bolted to a stock 67 400E. The whole suspension and drive train was built for future plans of a 475HP 425. All I have to do now is if I build the 425 is change the converter....Have a little over $2,300 in it. Like svnt442 said, there nice.

Well i was wrong on the Transmission that i had in my car, it is the 200 metric transmission. so i went with the Thm400 to rebuild, another thing that i realized the mount location is over 5 Inches further back. does anyone know if there is an adapter plate or something to allow the mount of the 400 in my 84 delta 88?

Has anyone seen or done this type of swap before ?

Do you have a short shaft 400 trans? The short shaft 400 and 200r4 have the trans mount in the same location. Since the 84 could have been equipped with a 2004r trans it should be easy to find the factory parts to install the 400. You will need the proper yoke and have a driveshaft the right length

That’s your issue. The trans mount is on the extension housing, the long extension puts the mount way too far back for the crossmember to fit. Either modify the crossmember, or have the long shaft trans torn down and reassembled with the short output shaft and extension. Where are you located? I have several rebuild BOP short shaft 400 ready to go.
