New Guy Question..... TH400

I picked up the car a couple of weeks ago, the shift cable was unhooked. We were able to start and load the car in drive. Since then I have removed the interior and I would like to get it running and driving before having the floor pans replaced. For some reason the cable and the lever don't line up, they didn't with the original cable either. New Cable and the brackets at Obsolete parts were the same. Can I just adjust the shift linkage lever or is there something else I need to do to get this in working order?

1971 Olds Cutlass - 455 TH400 Bucket seats and floor console shift. Fred Flinstone Floors at the moment. Any help is appreciated.

Would moving the bracket that attaches to the trans pan forward one step in the pan bolt pattern work?
