Went to get a few quarts of transmission fluid and all Napa stocks is D6. Back label states its compatible with D1, D2 and D3. What happened to Dextron 4 and 5?
That is an appropriate transmission fluid for your 97 88. I believe those were designed for Dexron III.
I don't think I've ever seen a Dexron IV ATF. I know I've seen Dexron V in the past. The auto manufacturers just update fluids every so often.
Most parts stores carry universal ATF now. I suppose it works just as good as Dexron. When I was in college I recall guys rebuilding their TH350s and putting Type F ATF in it. It was supposed to be the cheap man's way of getting a fluid that worked more like Trick Shift. I just always used Dexron III. Of course, at the time I owned my 64 Olds 98 with a Slim Jim Rotohydramatic. That transmission is such a POS...
I understand Dexron V1 is backwards compatible with all previous Dexron transmission oils from Dexron 11 up.
To put your mind at rest why not contact the Dexron website and ask?. I have had helpful information from UK oil companies, no reason why Dexron (or whoever owns it) shouldn't help you.
