58 98 No Reverse, Fixed
After rebuilding the motor, decided it was time to deal with the no reverse issue. Trans was already drained when I got the car, sitting that way for over 20 years. So I cleaned the pan, someone had already removed any metal pieces from the pan. Cleaned the filter and put on new gasket and filled it up before starting the rebuilt motor. Added a bottle of Lucas? additive hoping for a miracle.
Had reverse at idle but would slip and clunk when throttle applied. Put about 80 miles on it the last month and shifting got smoother. But still no reverse.
I was guessing bad reverse cone from other threads.
So I pulled the extension housing, able to do it without pulling the trans. Just had to lower the trans so the housing would clear the overhead. Had to pull the rear pump. ( Last year for rear pump?)
Found broken piston wave release spring and reverse clutch release spring. Parts available from Fatsco, total under $70 including shipping. That also included a shift shaft seal kit and new pan gasket. I used old pump to case gaskets, so far no leaks.
Reverse works great and shifting is getting better.
