Stuck lightning rods 84 olds newbie

This is my first post but I also need help. I have an 84 hurst and the lightning rods are stuck. The car is stuck in drive or over drive and I cannot get it unstuck and out of gear.

To many moving parts in these units. Have you pulled the console and inspected
the shifter itself? More than likely, very dirty, and needs a good oiling.

Good luck and welcome to the forum, let's see some pics.

It's a sun roof model. I just bought it 2 days ago. It has been restored somewhat and the number 1 shifter was the problem that got the other two stuck. I should have left it alone until I could get it rebuilt. It is currently stuck in gear, Im about to start taking it apart to see if I could get it back to working properly. There are some more things I need to get done to it. The sunroof motor doesn't work I was told. It could be the switch or the motor. Do they sell these motors still?

Check E-bay for a chassis service manual (CSM). They are one of the best tools
you can have. There are fellows here with more experience on these later models
than me. I have never owned a H/O as new as yours. I had a 73 H/O rust bucket
that I really enjoyed though.

I did own some nasty lightning rods at one time that needed a good cleaning. The buttons were stuck bad on them. Good luck with yours, sure looks like a nice car.

You need to be a little more specific... What are you calling the number one shifter? The far right 1st/2nd gear lever and the middle 2nd/3rd gear lever need to be in the correct position before the left shifter can be moved into drive or park...

John, weren't there some of these that were also 200 4R units (OD), as well?
I don't know for sure, just going for some edumacation.

Yes... The OD was a function of the left (or main shift lever)... Right lever did a 1st 2nd gear shift, middle lever a 2nd 3rd gear shift, and the left was drive and overdrive... They are different shifters because of the shift plate difference (which I believe is a welded component to the base) for the drive versus overdrive trans (200 vs 2004R)... I would have to take a look at my spare in the shop to verify any other difference...Also, I'm not sure which shifter I still have, I had one of each, but I sold one last summer to a friend...

Thanks for the responses I got it worked out. It seemed the problem was the buttons are connected to these pieces that slide in and out of slots on the shifter plate. The main shifting rod button and connecting piece was stuck. I took a screw driver and pushed it on down out of it's slot allowing me to move the shifter back and forth. It seems the button and cable pieces are just sticky mainly. Now another question, does anyone know if the sunroof window motor is the same as the drivers side and passenger side window motors? Do they still sell these motors as well?

With age these shifters are troublesome. Most of them need taken all apart and cleaned and readjusted to bring them back to good operating condition. There is a little spring rings on the bottom that likes to brake also. You can't find these rings but I figured out a way to make them easy enough. I believe I made a thread on it several years ago.

For future reference here is a thread about these shifters. I just updated it. May have nothing to do with your problem but thought I would post the link.
