64 Cutlass transmission?

Hey, I'm a car guy but not much of a mechanic. I've got a '64 cutlass with a 330. It's got the two speed automatic transmission. Lately it's been really slow to shift into gear. I basically give it gas after I'm stopped, it revs up a little, then gradually slips into gear. It does the same thing when I'm going slow through a turn. I'll start to hit the gas and it just revs the engine until it slips into gear. I also hear it make a small clunk in the transmission when I slow down to a stop. Do I need a new transmission? Or what should I do? Thank you!

My 2 thoughts are change the filter and fluid, and/or slop, in the shifting mechanism where it's not putting the trans lever all the way into the correct spot now. Those are cheaper than a new or another used but working transmission.

Others might have some more ideas.

What colour is the fluid? Does it smell burnt on the dip stick?

Ouch, I missed that one, and first choice of causes, but its been so long since I had run into that one.
