I just purchased an 87 442 a few weeks ago. There is a small tag on the passenger side of the transmission with KZF on it. So, I know this transmission was for the 85-87 442, but is there supposed to be any VIN on it to show that this transmission originally came with this car?


Again, this is my first Olds G body, so my knowledge is limited and I am trying to learn what and where the numbers should be, based on what I have.

As you state KZF = 442 and Hurst Olds. Buy a vin number search comes up empty on a 200.

However, this tag does not have the partial vin. Good question. Check just above the pan rail on the drivers side just above the gasket surface. Could be anywhere on that rail. Normally TH350, 400, 700s etc have the partial vin on the pan rail where the shift linkage shaft pokes into the case.

Awesome! Thank you for your input. I did notice that the numbers on the tag had no correlation to the VIN, so it got me worried this might not be the original transmission. Now I can decipher what those numbers mean on the tag, and I will check the drivers side of the trans to see if I can find the VIN somewhere. I have found them easily on my TH350s, hopefully this will be simple as well!


This transmission does tend to shift pretty hard. Sometimes it even chirps the tires going into second gear. I found a box in the trunk for a Shift Technologies Product "The 200-4R Super Servo" that's installed.


I know one thing, it behaves as advertised...lol.

KZFs in the 442 and H/Os had an upgraded valve body over the run of the mill 200s. Liken it to a GN or GNX though not as aggressive.

And 85 442's transmission was an OZ code.

Another good way to tell that trans apart from the regular trans is 1000 rpm higher full throttle shift points.
