What kind of shifter is this?
Can anyone identify what kind of shifter/console this is and if this style was an original option for a 1968 cutlass? Its the only picture I have, and its not real good, but I Figured someone on here would be familiar enough to ID it anyway. Its got an auto trans. Thanks in advance.

Looks like an aftermarket ratchet shifter with reverse lock out. The attached pic shows what an automatic console optioned 67-69 Olds 442/Cutlass would have from the factory.
Some clues to look for to see if it was an original console car is to look at the speedometer it shouldn't have PRND123 stenciled in along the bottom nor a shift indicator floating around in there. PRND123 was on the console. The lower ring below the ignition switch on the steering column should not have a hole for shift handle provisions(cant tell if your does). Also look for evidence of the console mount brackets under the rug. This car looks to be a 69 as it has the ignition switch on the steering column. 68s had the switch in the dash next to the lighter. Chances are this car was converted from a bench seat column shifted car to a some-other-manufacturer seats and shifter car. Note everything to convert a column car to a floor shift car can be bolted on/off. Google 68 and 69 Olds 442/Cutlass and look at the front end and rear end differences. The two cars in my avatar are 68s. Of course the VIN will say 8 for 68, 9 for 69. Unless its really cobbled and butchered up.

Thank you for your insight. What does the aftermarket shifter do to a cars value? Owner says its a '68, could column interchange from a 69? Otherwise, maybe the title dont really go to this car. We'll compare vins if we go look at it.

Considering that 1969 columns had the ignition on the column and 1968 columns did not, I'd say the owner doesn't have a clue. The aftermarket shifter and everything else in that interior is certainly not helping value.

Why do you think that's a 1968 Cutlass? There are no vent windows in the doors, so the doors are 1969. I can't tell if there's an ignition switch on the dash or not. What does the VIN say? What about the cowl tag?

The owner just posted it as a '68. I haven't seen it myself so no idea about the VIN or cowl. I'm sure ya'll are right & its a '69 though with so many identifiers saying it is.
