1970 cutlass o type rear what to do??

I got a o type rear in a 70 cutlass open carrier with 2:56 gears. I was hoping to install a posi carrier and gears as I rebuild the car . Iam finding parts are hard to come by and only found one aftermarket vendor and that's pricey. I would like to keep the rear that came in the car and use it but may be a better option to find another rear end , maybe 71 or 72. Iam sure posters here have had this issue hopping to get some ideas on my issue . Thanks in advance???

Really kinda of depends if a good deal finds your way. Whether a better geared Type O or a 71-72 8.5 builder rear. I have bought 71-72 8.5 rears as cheap as $50 but it still usually a 2.56 open so not saving money at that point. Hang loose a search for deals on a 3.08-3.42 type O but also on the other 71-72 8.5 Skylark-Cutlass donor. At least with 8.5 the gears are super easy and cheap (late model 1500 series GM truck ) 80's,90's,2000's

I have a set of new Richmond 3.90 gears for the O-Type, but that's probably a lot more gear than you were wanting.

Probably help if you say what you want for gearing.

Supercarsunlimited.com has carriers and gears. Some of us may have gears you might want as well.

And just go complete the info these are engineered to work on the 3.08 / 3.23 carrier.

3.90 might work Iam installing a 4l60 overdrive trans . Plugging some numbers in I think a ratio like that should give good rpm range at highway speed still

Parts source

Talk to Jim at JD Race. He goes by Monzaz on here. He has helped many with rebuild parts for the 67-7O Type O and can give you info on other options like the 71-72 Corporate 10 bolt.
