Muncies

Is there any significant difference between the Muncie four speeds that have one ring versus two on the input, other than ratio differences? Both have P code stampings.

The "P" in the code simply means it is a Muncie. The numbers afterward decode to build date. If there is a letter at the end, it will signify M20/M21/M22 for certain years ('69 and later). The VIN derivative on the other side of the case will tell you what GM brand and year of manufacture, along with the last six digits of the VIN of the car it was a part of.

Number one. wide ratio. P1129 stamped 6K131208, bolt on arms.
Number two. close ratio. P0516 No stamping. studs to attach arms. Metal tag attached to side cover stamped 3877459. I suspect this was a replacement trans.

Another case only, P0911 stamped 5K108630. Case casting # 3851325

Referring to the book...

Looking at page 18 of my copy of Paul Cangialosi's Muncie 4-speed Transmissions book tells us:

P1129 = November 29. (Because of the 4-digit length, this code represents a '63-'66 case. It is missing the year numeral that is found at the beginning of later models. "6K' in the VIN derivative says it is a 1966 trans. The last six digits of this number should match the VIN of the car it came in. K represents the plant where it was installed in the car. I don't know all the factory location codes. I'm sure someone else can chime in.)

P0516 = May 16. Again, the four-digit length says it is a '63-'66 model. I'm not familiar with the readout of the tags.

P0911 = September 11. Again, '63-'66. The casting narrows it down - 3851325, according to the book, is '64-'65 - mostly '64. However, the VIN Derivative on this one says it is a '65 model ("5K...").

I hope this is all helpful.

(Apologies for the book scan being upside down. Not sure what happened, as it is right-side-up on my PC.)

Below is the page I'm looking at:
