ANY HYDRA MATIC (slim jim) GURUS IN HERE?
Got some issues with a slim jim trans and need some help. The engine goes dead when it's put in gear, just like a torque convertor gone bad. As you know the trans doesn't have a convertor,so a little help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

Mike: It does have a torque converter of sorts. It is called an accelerotor and is behind the balancer at the front of the transmission. It is a small (8" I believe) coupling with a stator element, so yes, slim jims do have a torque converter.
Your problem may be a mis-adjusted throttle linkage to transmission. These seem to be a real pain with these transmissions.

THE best source of info on Slim -Jim's can be found in the Oldsmobile factory chassis service manual for your year car .
Troubleshooting, adjustment, overhaul , everything .
Try to get an original printed copy if possible , pictures are easier to see .
Usually E-Bay has a few offered .

I had a full set of manuals when I owned my 64 98. The transmission manual was invaluable.
If you need parts you can contact Fatsco transmissions. Their parts are a bit high, but they have excellent customer service and they are about the only supplier around.

sorry to butt in here ..
Anyone have links to the service manuals .. I read about chassis, electrical, trans are separate ... cant seem to find them .. 63 Olds 98 Custom
Might be a dumb question but here it goes..
Why doesn't people manual shift their tranny ? I know it gives the drop when switching gears but just say for instance you were cruising in first then you slid it up to 2nd then 3rd .. of course not high rpm .. What harm is that causing exactly ?

Here is a reproduced version of the 63 shop manuals:

I would be wary purchasing them though. Often, when scanning the manuals for reproduction the quality of images is lost and they aren't much use. If you continue checking E-bay I'm sure some will eventually turn up that are originals. I recall that in 1964 there were 5 or 6 separate brown, paper-cover manuals.
As far as shifting manually goes, I suppose you could do that. In fact, there are directions in the car's owners manual for shifting gear ranges while driving (mostly for towing purposes). The problem is that the valve body for the Slim Jim isn't setup like a TH350 or TH400 with a manual valve body. Even if you shifted manually you would still need to assure that the TV was setup correctly,
