1965 4 speed shifter

Hey I'm looking for some help. I have a 65 442 with a 4 speed and still original to the car. My problem is the shifter is horribly loose, is there anybody out there that rebuilds these? I don't know what brand oldsmobile used back then if its a Saginaw or a hurst or what ever. Any help is greatly well come

Check out the website 442BRO.com, his site is dedicated to 65 442s. In his trans/rearend section he has some good info on the '65 shifters. Lots of good reading & pics!!

If it has the original shifter and handle it would have been a Muncie unit. They didn’t start putting Hurst shifters in them until 66.

Hurst used to rebuild the older Munice/ Mr. Gasket shifters years ago and they stopped. There are few re-builders to check out, one of them is:
https://www.shifterdoc.com/productca...hifter-d17.htm

If all else fails or you want to install a different shifter: I have a 70-80's vintage Mr. Gasket shifter in excellent condition that was re-bulit by Hurst/Mr. Gasket years ago and never used it.

You can buy an adapter that lets you bolt your original Muncie stick to a Hurst shifter body.

No. I'm talking about this adapter to mount the Muncie shifter STICK on a Hurst shifter body.

That’s the adapter I also used. Do you know if using the adapter it would raise the handle up higher than originally designed?

Hard to tell, but here are the two side-by-side. The Hurst with adapter looks a little taller.

Hi,

Muncie style shifters all seem to have extra play, the unit itself was used by Buick, Oldsmobile and Chevy so you might be able to find a tighter one, also there might be someone making reproductions especially if for a Chevy lol.

I know you can try to rebuild yourself, may need to weld up any grooves or rust pits, and might be possible to shim up the play to a extent.

Regards,

Hey guys rather having my piece of garbage Muncie shifter rebuilt and still end up with less than satisfactory, I went out and bought a new Hurst Comp Shifter and linkage. Plus I bought the "t" adapter to put my original handle back on. I have a Consul in my car. I installed every thing but now the base of the handle and the top of the "T" hits the consul going into 2nd or 4th not allowing Trans. to go into gear. Has anybody else had this problem? I see really only two fixes, fab up my own off set "T" or cut off the mounting base on handle, weld an extension on and get it re-chromed. Looking for help.
