1983 Toronado Transaxle

Does anyone know who to get a hold of for a ring and pinion. GM made a 315 and 336. Any help would be great.

The GMC motorhome community is probably a better source for different final drive gears, but be sitting down when you ask about the prices. Those RVs used the older TH425 transaxle. I don't know how the TH325 gears compare. There is also an aftermarket limited slip differential. The manufacturer thinks very highly of it.

They actually made quite few different ratios for 83. I have a list at home. Will try to take a picture of it tonight. I have actually seen NOS ones on e-bay but they were very pricy.

Surprisingly, more that I would have imagined. For the 1982-85 cars, the parts book shows four available gear sets.

RPO F47 2.73:1
RPO F45 2.93:1
RPO F57 3.15:1
RPO FW4 3.36:1

Thanks Joe
All of the gear sets are discontinued through GM. Called all gear manufactures and no go.Someone has to have one or two of these just sitting around. Still not giving up,

Thank Bill
Called up advanced automotive group. He said maybe but he needs drawings of the ring and pinion. They are a CNC machine shop. I tried advanced automotive machine but no one there, try again later.

I sought out this info years ago.

According to the Rivi peeps from the Turbo Buick sites :

3.36's were supposed to be stock on the 83/84 turbo Rivs with the 85 turbo Rivs getting 3.15's.

3.15's should also be in the 4.1 Eldo & Seville 82-85 which should be easier to find.

Its a shame these or even steeper gears weren't more readily available.

A stock tire height E-Body loses some of the benefit of a better gear vs a stock tire height A/G body.

I always believed the 3.73's in the VIN 9 307 Hurst/442s had much more of an effect on acceleration than the different torque converter - carb - distributor & the "Y" pipe dual outlets did.

There's a twisted part of me that would love to see a regular Y 307 Cutlass with nothing more than 3.73's go up against a VIN 9 Cutlai just for gits & shiggles.
