1970 Toronado - questions

hi olds-fans,

a lonely 1970 toronado gt (455cui) found the long way,
here to germany, but not in the best condition.

the interieur is okay, exept the dashboard and its
front-speaker. the rear-speaker was already changed
and a new radio was installed, but the standard works
also. i hope that the tape-deck also works, but here we
don't have any tapes of that kind.
someone knows, where to get some?

another problem is the electric. the previous owner installed
a lpg-system, not really professional, that we need to re-build
the wiring system. for that a wiring diagram would be helpfull and
i hope to find one. in the www i found some, but not in a usefull quality.

the bodyworks is another construction site. we repaired the hood,
with had more similarity to a tent, than to a hood for an engine, but
it looks nice now. both fenders need to be replaced or repaired to.
replacementparts would be nice an maybe you have some more information,
where to get some parts. also we need the front-grill.

but most important is the emission data sheet for that engine,
to get the car licenced again.

our modell looks like that one:
http://www.collectorsautosupply.com/...oronado_gt.htm

also helpfull would be the information about brake system, shock adsorbers and suspension.

our aim is to get that car on road again and show the people what luxery car was build in 1970s, where some companies here climacontrol, electrical windows and even radio have as option, not als standard. and of course for that goosepumps-sound of the v8-engine.

i hope that you can help me,
thanks a lot,

diabolic from germany.

You will be hard pressed to find emissions data for that car. In 1970 I think the only emissions control device they used was the PCV valve. I'm not sure where you would even look for that data. Perhaps Joe Padavano would know.

My 70 Toronado had a PCV valve, the heat pipe that went to the air cleaner snout (flapper valve in the snout, only let hot air off the exhaust manifold into AC until warm). There was also the vacuum switch (thermactor switch?) in the intake manifold that was controlled by the coolant temp. It had several vacuum lines running to and from it. Not sure you can call that an emission device but maybe. I don't remember anything else emission wise on it.

I would highly recommend you purchase a 1970 Chassis Service Manual, like this one on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Oldsm...item439c8ac19d

If you watch ebay for a while you might find one cheaper, I do see used ones from private parties go in the $35-50 range. This one is being sold by a business. One of these manuals will answer many of the questions that come up with text, pictures and diagrams and it has a nice schematic for the wiring system. It includes all Oldsmobile models from 1970.

Now for the emissions, I know cars sold in California had special emission requirements that go back as early as 1966. So you may have a smog pump with associated parts on your car, but I'm not sure. If you can post pictures of your engine we can probably help clear this topic up. John
