1970 Toronado gt carb

Hi again all,

Just recently I found what seemed to be a numbers matching remanufactured carb from united remanufacturing for my 1970 toro gt. This evening I received it and the numbers did not match. My OEM is a RC 7040252. The one they sent me is a RC 7041251. After doing some intense research everything I read states that the 1251 is only for the 455 built in 1971 and it does not include the toro. So I called united and the person who answered the phone said that it will still work and the only reason they sent that to me was because they didn't have a 0252 air horn core in stock. Am I spending bad money and could I potentially be either harming or underperforming my engine? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks everyone.

Marc

Hi Marc. Really shouldnt hurt it but IMHO, if you specifically bought it because it was supposed to be a GT carb, Id send it back. There are several big carb shops that seem to pull that crap on a regular basis when I try to get replacements at my local Federated. Pretty much find the carbs on my own now and have good carb guys rebuild them for me. Pat

If they will take it back I would send it back to them, its not what you ordered to start with. the 1970 toronado carburetors are out there, they are the same for the GT and non GT cars

Thanks guys! So I guess the real question is if I restore my toro to stock will I be losing in the long run if I have a 71 cutlass carb? Any resto guys out there that could chime in with their opinion?

The only time the original numbers carburetor really come into play is when you restore to the number 1 condition for cars shows that judge everything for points. when the carburetor is on the car it will look the same as the original and you cant see the number unless you remove the air cleaner assembly. my 70 gt car has a original 7040252 carburetor but the engine is a non-matching numbers engine out of a 1970 non-gt toronado. the carburetor you have will work, just dont use a edelbrock or holley if your going for an original look

Look at the fuel inlet. I'm used to the Toronado carbs of that vintage having a 90 degree fuel inlet, its facing the pass fender. The other 455 carbs come straight out toward the radiator. Since the Toro intake is sunken in the center the straight out line may not work, I think the fuel line hits the thermostat housing. Verify it will fit and work for you this before you make any decision.

2blu the 70 gt carb did not have a 90 degree inlet it was straight like the other 455 you mentioned, as well as the 7041251. Nsnarsk I wish I could have mine redone but the fuel bowl is extremely rooted and the prong that holds the pivot for the float is missing! Thanks for all the input guys! I plan to try and use this one and if I ever get close enough to bring it to a car meet to be judged I will get a stock one then. And if anyone has a 70 gt I could use some detailed pics of the craziness of those vacuum hoses!!!

'66 & '67 qjets had the 90 degree inlet, in '68 and later they were straight in.
the differences between 7040252 and 7041251 are several, and you don't want to dink around with it. send it back and tell them to get you the correct carb.
