'65 442 Air Cleaner Issues

About a year ago I replaced the stock 4GC (not original dammit and it was giving me fits) with a Street Demon. Very nice carb, minor install mods and easy to tune.

The issue is with the '65 air cleaner base. The 4GC has a smaller throat size than the later Q-Jets, Holleys, Demon"s, etc. The aftermarket base I used is 1 1/2" smaller in OD than the lid. Consequently there is more engine heat going down the carb than I would like. Been running it this way for over a year with no real issues, but would like to somehow seal it up for a cooler intake air temp and better suck for the blow-by gasses.

Is there a base out there that has the Q-Jet throat size that will fit the original '65 442 lid which has a (EDIT) 17 5/8" OD and correct size filter?

Thanks.............Steve

Why not modify your original base to fit the new carb? Or fabricate a ring to go around the new base to fill the opening.

The 1966 and 67 cars used Qjets with a similar air cleaner. One of those bases should work.

Thanks Joe: I checked and all 3 years use the same filter element. Would you happen to have a base laying around??

Not going to modify the original base just because it's original. If I did try that I'd probably need some of the suitable explosives you mention!! The ring thing maybe my only other option if I can't find a suitable base...............Thanks

Can someone measure the bottom OD of their 66--67 442 chrome single snorkel air cleaner lid for me?

My 65 lid OD is 17 1/2" and the base OD is 17 5/8". Just need to know for sure if a 66--67 442 base will work for my project in the original thread.

Thanks............Steve

Another thank you Joe. Your "should work" needs to be "will work". Picked up a '67 442 lid & base. Obviously I can't use the '67 lid on my '65, but the base was a perfect fit for my project.

Again.........THANK YOU!!!

I'll probably get reamed for this, but. I'm pretty sure all 65's had the snorkel. I think the open air cleaner came to be with the 67 4 speed, although my Fremont built 67 442 4 speed came with a snorkel??
