Question Hydraulic valve lifters

HI guys

I've got a new noise on my engine. It's a 307 and if the engine is cold there is a nailing noise, but after ca. 3 km of driving the noise isn't anymore. Could that be the hydraulic valve lifters? It's only when the engine is cold.

Thanks! 98regency

Sure it could be
could be loose pistons with excess bore clearance
water pump
PS pump
a lot of things
if it ain't broke... don't fix it, though.

Can I fix the noise, if I fill in another oil? And what could the reason be for nailing hydraulic valve lifters in cold condition of the engine?

Changing to a thinner oil is certainly easy enough. Why not?

Might be dirty lifters- might as well try a motor flush chemical just before the fresh oil. Might be dirt particles that a flush will not remove, though.

Check the rockers for wear perhaps? A good excuse to replace valve cover gaskets.

You can use a piece of hose as a stethoscope to pinpoint noises- hole one end to your good ear and put the other end here and there to find out the source of a noise.

If it goes away within a few minutes, is it really worth a lot of attention though?

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" as they say.

Ok, I'll try to check this.

Your right, but I think I better do something now and so I can prevent damage in the future ^^ I think when there is a nailing noise there's something running without or not enough oil :S

Part of the problem is translation- "nailing" noise could be anything from a ticking lifter- light tick tick tick sound, to detonation- harsh rattling sound, more random than the regular ticking of a loose lifter- to the bang bang bang of a rod bearing spun and eating its way thru the crank.

Can you have a local mechanic take a peek at it?

There is no garage in my area which has experience with us-cars. I do all by myself. I have enough experience to say, it's not a bearing.. It's something with the lifters..
Could be that the oil in the lifters drain off when the engine is not running for a couple of hours and then when the engine is cold and I start it the thicker oil needs too long to fill the hydraulic valve lifters . This can be the reason for the nailing noise in the first few minutes.. It's more a tack tack tack tack...
So I'm going to try a thinner oil at the weekend.. Maybe it helps :P

All-clear.. Problem solved.

It was the plastic cover of the transmission gear and the starter -.-
The hydraulic valve lifters are ok.

Anyway thanks for your help!
