350 olds lower pulley and balancer

Today's surprise,

Since my car sat more than it was driven, the fuel pump was leaking, while replacing the fuel pump I put on my glove and gave the timing chain the "finger test" (the car IS over 40, doctors recommend it ) and the chain was pretty floppy. Since the water pump was pretty crusty I dove in and replacing pump and timing chain, well, here's the question (finally) I removed the pulley bolts, but the pulley(s) don't come off? I even removed the crank bolt, but nothing? is it just snug? I'm not the hammer and pry-bar kind of guy (until it comes to that) I figure its easier to ask those who know.

Thanks

The pulley comes off the balancer; it is just stuck with rust, etc. The balancer must be pressed off. Most people use a steering wheel puller and re-thread the bolt onto the crank without the thick washer. The balancer will come off with the bolt on, and it keeps the threads from getting chewed by the puller.

nope, just like I thought ...NO RUST

Well, as always , I'm cleaning up someone elses lack of skill and or car. Looks like someone had done a seal and speedy sleeve on the balancer at one time. They must have dropped or didn't line up the pulley hole on the balancer, but that didn't slow them down, they crushed it on That bur was what held me up, I used the "force" and was able to convince it I was in control now all would be good soon and it saw it my way. The chain was loose as the "popular" cheerleader in high school, and the front cover has to go since it has a couple deep pits and I'm sure its not going to last another 40 yrs so I'll get a new one. The question is, did Olds cam gears have plastic on them like old Chevys? Also, I'm wondering is my backyard mechanic slipped in a new "race" cam when he did the intake? is a factor olds cam ROUND on the end? mine has all these funny triangles and stuff? I can't upload pics on here since I guess they are too good ? speedy sleeve on order since the one on it s grooved real bad, I'll check dealer for front cover.

I believe from the 60's(maybe earlier) all the way through the 80's, Olds engines had the nylon cam gears. I know my 69 delta ate one and blocked up the oil pump screen, not good

Gear

After getting the pulley past the hackery, it was an easy down hill run. The balancer came right off (with puller) and the front cover was a breeze. I suspect that "someone" has been sleeping in my bed? The top (cam) gear is all steel, the chain is made by "MORSE" ? and the balancer had a speedy sleeve on it. I picked my covers today so as long as I don't damage the seal puttin it in, I'll be ready to waste some $3.30 per gallon gas by the weekend !!
