[Flame suit on] You will be fine using the existing cover, as long as none of the corrosion goes all the way through the cover.

You may be able to find a new one or one in better shape. It was used from 1964-1990 on everything from 260 to 455.

If you can't find one, sandblast the water pump side especially paying attention to the pitted areas. If they don't blow thru while you're blasting, you should be OK.

Then mix up a good epoxy and work it into the pits for good adhesion. An epoxy that can be sanded or machined is what you want. Level it down good with a sanding block or nib file, in multiple coats and steps if needed, and check it against a water pump with known true sealing surfaces.

A little work, but beats coolant getting into yer oil.

I have reused way worse.........As long as you have it clean when assembled the silcon and gasket will fill in the pits........I have hit them with a D/A for a uniform finish.......Jerr

Looks fine to me - nobody's ever going to see the inside of it behind the water pump.

Just put your engine back together.
