350 crankshaft pulley torque specs says 315 ft lbs in manual??!!??

1971 Olds 350

What the hell? To get 315 ft lbs I tried doing a handstand on the torque wrench with my feet up on the ceiling for squat like power and the wrench slipped and I hit my face on the engine and landed in my full oil drain pan. No just kidding but how the hell am I supposed to get that much torque on it and is that even the correct number? Online I've seen numbers ranging 110-130 ft lbs which sounds a little more reasonable. Also, what's a good way to tighten this thing so it won't turn the crankshaft while it's on the engine stand?

I assume you mean the balancer and not the pulley, lol.
I'd love to see a pulley bolt torqued to 315 lb.ft.

I just zip it on with an impact after installation with a little loctite. Never had one fall off yet, but I have a pretty good impact.

if your torque wrench don't go to 110 to 130 foot lbs you can do this with the same results.

use a 1/2 in breaker bar and a 10 foot cheater bar. then slide the cheater bar all the way down the breaker bar till it is making contact with the socket. then hook a fish scale to the end of the cheater bar and pull down till you get to 11 to 13 lbs on the fish scale. for keeping the engine from turning you need someone holding the flywheel. i just have someone hold it with a pry bar between two bolt heads that hold the flywheel on.

it is easier to just use the impact gun like mentioned above.

It is a BIG bolt, gets big torque.
You can never verify torque with an impact gun, no matter how much I do love them.
And I have seen one come loose, what a mess.
Get at least 250# verifiable torque on it, with loctite.
Be creative.
