Changing valve seals

Any ideas on how to remove the valve springs near the brake vacuum booster cannot get them with my puller

also what would cause these exhaust seals to melt

What type of puller do you have ? I have one of these and it gets into tight spots: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/otc-4573

I have seen exhaust seals get that way because the valve guides were totally worn out and allowing exhaust heat to come up the guide.

By the way those seals do not look right for Oldsmobile. Just about every Olds head I have ever done uses a hard plastic seal on the exhaust. The Fel Pro ones are white plastic if I remember correct.

I use this style. Note that sometimes the easiest thing to do is to jack up the engine on that side.

Depending on firewall clearance, you might want to remove the distributor cap to be safe. Also consider pulling the vacuum hose out of the booster.

I also had some melted exhaust seals, nearly all the center ones. Your motor may have been run hot, my water pump actually had the front bearings go and it overheated pretty good.
