Car seems to idle fine; sputters in gear
as the title says, the Car seems to idle just fine. As soon as I put it in gear, reverse or drive, it seems to sputter a little bit. Any idea how to trouble shoot? I’m relatively new to this classic car stuff so forgive me for the “probably simple” question.

It's hard to armchair a bullseye solution without more info. Many things can cause the problem you mentioned. Timing adjustment, bad plugs, vacuum leak, carb adjustment, spark plug wires, bad ground, ...ect. How about some engine pics with the air cleaner off so everyone can evaluate any obvious problems. A dial timing light, vacuum gauge, voltmeter and tachometer are good tools to have for troubleshooting, youtube has some good videos that can help with basic tuning. Eliminating what is not the cause gets us closer to what is the cause.

Thanks for the input. I have a 72 cutlass with stock 70 350 motor. I pulled plugs. Car seems to be running rich. Plugs are black and exhaust is vert Smokey. I notice that there’s a valve/switch up front with with 3 vacuum ports w/o any lines connected.
I also have this book that’s suppose to show the diagram for vacuum lines. It doesn’t show my year in the book. It starts with 1976. Any idea where I can find the proper book?
