Replacing the timing cover and fuel pump, want to make sure I put goop where I should and not where I shouldn't.


Fuel Pump to Block Gasket - yes/no, one side or both?
Timing cover to block Gasket - both sides? if only one, which side?
Water pump gasket - same question


I know they're basic questions but don't want to go overboard with the crap!


Also, what ID hose for the small piece between the water pump and the thermostat cover?

I do a small amount, both sides on all those gaskets.

Here is my rule of thumb:

1-Do not use gasket seal at all if it can be avoided.
2-If used, use only on one side.
3-Put on the side of the part that is taken off when repair made (e.g. thermostat housing side, not block side). Doing so makes it far easier to clean a surface when is on the workbench, vs. under the hood.
4-Hold gasket in place during installation by tying it to part with sewing thread.

I like super gray or super black RTV and use it on both sides of those paper gaskets. None on carburetor gaskets. Gasoline eats RTV.

Well, I'm glad we got that cleared up! :-D


I guess there isn't any wrong approach to it then, although some methods will save cleanup work down the road.

Most important, don't overdo it resulting in blobs of rtv in the cooling system or oil pan.

I used sparingly on the gaskets. (Nothing on the fuel pump, just enough to hold cover gasket to the block then full coverage on the cover side, both sides on the water pump gasket.


All the blobs wound up on me once I realized the tactical error of not removing the oil pan and the fight ensued.

I use a very thin coat of RTV on both sides of the gasket. I let it dry for a few minutes and then applied.
