New 350, 400E, 425 Pistons

Just spoke with my contact at Mahle and we're moving forward on the new Olds pistons for 350 engines.
Compression distance will be 1.625 with a 10cc valve trough. Bore sizes are 4.065, 4.100, 4.155 with their new 1.00, 1.00, 2.00mm ring pack and made from their proprietary coated 4032 material. Wrist pin will be .984 to accommodate honing rods to size. Sale price should be the same as a typical SBC Mahle flat top.
At 10cc and with that cd the measured compression ratios will be around 9.2-9.5:1 with the various combinations and typical stock deck heights, gaskets, and iron head chamber sizes.
Looking for a launch in the next few months. Comments?

4.065 = how much overbore? Stock 350 is 4.057 right? Sounds nice, price?

That should be a hone to size application.

Update;
Mahle tells me they will have 5 sets each of 4.065, 4.100, and 4.155 bore size pistons available on or near the PRI in December.
They will have 10cc valve reliefs, a 1.625 Comp distance, their proprietary coatings and come with locks, pins AND rings. Sell price will be approx $600 a set.
Thanks.

I wouldn't want to be the one honing .008 plus clearance out lol.

True but it will probably will be less minus cylinder wear. Either way another quality alternative.

Clearance is built into the piston so it would just be .008 total.
And most machine shops have a Sunnen CK10 cyl hone or similar. That'll make quick work of removing the .008. And obviously you could always step up to the 4.100.
I see all three sizes able to be used on a 350 and even a 400E.
The 425 will be by itself with the 4.155 but if demand presents itself, they'll make other sizes, and I hope we need a lot!!!

Yes it should!!
And the 10cc valve reliefs should put compression at between 9.25-9.65:1 with the corresponding heads, big block to big block etc. That was my target.

Mark:

I’m assuming that ring pack is thinner than factory, do you know approximately the HP gain from it?

As proposed it'll be a 1.00mm, 1.00mm, 2.00mm all steel ring pack, not iron. Avg gain is 10-12hp across the board. Plus these pistons will be coated and much lighter than anything else ever offered off the shelf for these engines before.

Take into consideration they're already going from a performance 5/64 set to a 1.2mm.
Most all here would be going from a crappy Egge or similar base ring set to the supplied 1.00, 1.00, 2.00 ring pack. Plus the longer the stroke, typically the bigger the benefit.

What would I be looking at for compression on a set of #5 heads, 350 c.i. (68cc) going with the 4.100" pistons?

What would compression be with these pistons in a 1971 Olds 350? Engine was stock 2 bbl. Does have Edelbrock RV cam (204/214) now. Heads (#7) have never been off.

First batch, 4.065's and 4.100's are scheduled to ship tomorrow. 4.155's to follow.
Thank you to all that stepped up and grabbed a set (me too). If I can show support, other stuff is coming. I promise!

I received my Christmas present yesterday. A word I normally save for Women and children, "beautiful" looking pistons! These are for a 400 E engine. My whole life I always bought Speed Pro/Clevite pistons. What a difference in these Mahle pistons. Thanks Mark for time/effort to get a quality option for the Oldsmobile fans.

What do the pistons weigh? Standard tool steel pins with factory wall thickness? Was the purpose of the 10cc relief to get the compression down? What kind of deck height do you use with this type of build? I know, a lot of questions ...... LoL

I just weighed my 4.100's, piston is 511 grams, pin is 120 and rings are around 25. Clips are another 4 or so. That should be about 150gr lighter than a lot of other current offerings. Remember, 28.3 grams equal 1 oz, that's a big difference when they're moving up and down.
Pins are tool steel, .984 diameter. Factory had overly thick walls, these are of a more modern design.
10cc relief works with all combinations to keep compression in the 9.25-9.8:1 area, depending on head and bore size. However the taller cd was so that most wouldn't have to buy expensive, thinner, shim type gaskets in order to retain decent squish. A regular Fel-Pro or similar can be used in most cases with adequate squish.

Hope this helps.

Good day, Mr. Cutlassefi. Do you know anyone making a stock replacement Olds 350 crankshaft or perhaps a lighter weight crankshaft? Thanks for enhancing our hobby.

Unfortunately the answer is No to both questions. The only readily available aftermarket 350 crank is my Stroker one. Sorry.
