77 olds 350 smog crap removal, track car
My son has a 77 Lemans with an Olds 350 in it. We are trying to get it running. We are wanting to remove all the smog crap off of it. As it is to be a track only car.
It is 100% stock right now. we want to axe the egr get rid of the stupid exhaust routing. Luckily she doesn't have the feed back carb. The carb seems to have about 10 lines coming off of it. Compared to my 71 Buick 350 has 4 vac advance, brake vac, carbon canister and one going to my Vac gauge.
Any help for my son's car would be appreciated.
Thanks
Tim

The Olds 350 was only offered in the LeMans in Calif that year, so apparently you have the Calif emissions?
You need to understand what the various systems do before randomly ripping them out. It's very easy to make the car run worse if you don't know what you are doing. Your first problem is that the carb and distributor are calibrated for the emissions equipment. One thing to understand is that the EGR (which is only active at part throttle under light loads and has no effect on wide open throttle horsepower) dilutes the intake mixture. Typically, cars with EGR are set to have more advance under these conditions, which can lead to pinging if you simply remove the EGR.
Frankly, if you really want to maximize output. get an early carb and distributor. Alternately, plan on changing the advance curve and carb jetting.

Yes, and remove and buy/fab a cover for the EGR. The curve for the distributor should be fine and will still be matched to the carb. As Joe said for improvement some fine tuning may be required. All the EGR did back then is route unburned fuel from the cat back through the carb.

The Olds motor were also in the high altitude cars. His car was purchased new here in Laramie, WY. 7220 elev.
I was thinking that an older model year carb would be one ticket. but didn't think of the distributor. Thanks for the info.
